you don't have alot of experience for a designer position..........IMO

looks like your dad's helped you get where your at, which is cool. but most designer work in CAD a few yrs. and your jumping to designer after 1.5yrs outta high school. IMO get more exp. w/ the CAD stuff, and work into designing.

most designers i know are in their late 20's.

????

i have way more experience than is needed for "entry level" design.....

i cant tell you how many ppl have worked under my father that just have your everyday "cy-fair" college autocad class, and some ITT tech school. i end up having to show them how to do alot of stuff... (thats how it was when i worked at abb).

thats true... alotta ppl up and left this industry, cause it was so rough, and hard to get employment....

now the big companies are starting to get desperate... theres way to much work than they can handle...

pretty soon, their gonna have to start hiring noobs, and training/schooling them, like they used to in the late '70s-mid '80s

wish flor would start up an electrical school like they had in the mid 80's... so my father says...

there are 2 course you can take

1) get on w/ a big firm ABB/KBR/Jacobs/Duke and hope for the best, they hire and fire daily. but they pay better

2) get on w/ a smaller eng. firm, and stick it out w/ them. less ups-n-downs.

and its flour not flor

if you say so, i'm gonna guess thats O/T pay. he's making more then most enginners in the city. and many project managers if thats the case. in fact he's the highest paid desginer i've ever heard off, and i bet if i ask my folks, both P.E. engineers in "the industry" 35+yrs also, prolly the highest they've ever heard off as well.

WHAT???

dude.... jacobs is asking ppl. to come out of retirment and paying more than 55.00/hr!

its true this is the most he's ever made... he normally brings in 40-45/hr...

theres many instrumentation guys at BJservices making way over 55.00/hr

got this letter from linda reay @ g.a.s

Quote:
"Goood News.

Bechtel people were in the Bull and Bear Wednesday on a "recruitment"
drive
- Brett Mash found out, told his boss Wayne Dolbec, Dolbec told him to
raise
the rates, can't lose any more pipers. they're looking at another
$4/hour
increase, put them on $52, direct. KBR is having another
"drive"
next Thursday at Sams Bar on Richmond - they're now offering $1000
bonuses
for any employees that can get someone to work for them (as are
Bechtel) - of course if you know anyone there, the usual deal is to
split it
50-50. Forecast is for it to hit $60/hr in the next few months"

Quote:
"I just got out of an informal information meeting with the Engineering Manager. Currently, Bechtel wants to hire 200+ engineers (discipline break down is not quite known, but "wide spread"). I'm not sure the need for designers, but I assume there would be several openings (I can find that out). The work on the books will last 5-6 years. Not included in the 5-6 year projection are the several jobs soon going into FEED/detail design stage and the jobs waiting to be awarded. It is indeed a good time for the industry, especially for us here in Houston. Heck, remember when you were wondering what was going to happen in 5 months??? Anyway, so far so good here. The benefits are great (see below). Forward me your resumes, if interested. Forward this to those who might be sleeping and missing out on the wave..................

- 9/80 work week
- Nicely priced benefits. They actually give you $56.10 per pay
period the help pay for them.
- $1 for $1 401k matching up to 5%, after one year service
- 2-3% profit sharing, after one year service (remember profit
sharing??? - - I don't.)
- $500-600 bonus around Thanksgiving/Christmas (what's a
bonus????)
- 1.5 days PTO per month (3 weeks after a year)
- You can "purchase" a week of vacation at 70 cents on the
dollar if you want
- Office is generally closed between Christmas and New Years,
unless project is busy
- Right across the street from the Galleria (shopping, people
watching, food, etc........)
- Jump in salary (times are good you know)
- OT is available most of the time if you desire
- Privately held company (no shareholders to please - - just
the Bechtel's)

Later dudes!

show me the money,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Just heard through the grapevine that the KBR leads have just had a meeting and that they will need 50 pipers before years' end. They are paying around $45-50/hour plus time and a half.

Bechtel are paying $55/hour, but straight time for o/t.

An ex-KBR piper has just left S&W Tuesday to go to Jacobs and is getting $50/hour, 1 1/2x for o/t and 60 hours/week.

Alliance Eng. have so many proposals out there they can hardly count them - if they get just a few of them, they will need a barrow load of pipers.

Word from a couple of senior leads in the business over a beer have said the rates will hit mid-50's by years' end (plus 1 1/2x for o/t).

Don't jump ship too soon, wait till it really starts bouncing.
