R1 break in period.

So I got the R1 with 877 on the clock, and its just turned over 925. Prev. owner said that the 600 mile had been performed by the dealership, but the shift light is still set at 7000. can I raise that to redline, or should I wait until 1000 miles? Whats typical?

Thanks,

Britt

to break it in the right way a heavy wrist is needed. redline once bounce of limiter twice then peg it until it BREAKS in. lol

I bought my '07 1k brand new. I hit 11k rpms in first before getting to the first stoplight of the dealer's lot. I had done my first trackday before hitting 600 miles.

That bike pulled harder than all of my friends with similar bikes.

First things first, unless the oil looks brand new through the sight glass... change it. You can't change the oil too frequently when the bike is new. I did at least three oil changes in the first thousand miles.

And to answer your question, I believe in breaking in an engine the way you are going to ride it. I've had a lot of different cars and bikes, and it's always worked well for me.

its open season on that now.....I usually change the oil at 200-300 miles and let it rip at 500 miles.... at a thousand miles I would have already had it at the drag strip a time or two...

we broke my new motor in the busa in on the dyno with about 10 street miles on it, after about 10 pulls, it was plenty broke in.....by the 17th pull it made 356hp.... Yep.... broke in.

I broke my engine in the moto-tune method. My buddy went strictly by the book. We took them to the Dyno compeltely stock and mine had 3 more hp.

This is a good read if anyone has not seen it:
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Some of the high points:

Change your oil after the rings are seated (at 20 miles). Change again at 600. Don't go synthetic until after 1500 miles.

The break in for street riding is basically getting out in the country side and accelerating hard and decelerating (using engine braking) in each gear for 15 minutes or so to seat the rings.

I broke the 636 in fairly easy for at least 150 miles then I started romping on it. Seemed to have worked as it was quick for what it was. Bike really came alive after 5K miles

The 10R I am breaking in more along the lines of the mototune way. Bike is starting to come alive at 700 miles.

I don't know which is better. We all can analyze and interpret data. I can only give my experience.

Guess I'm the only one who broke in all my bikes by the book other then maybe 1 or two high RPM's after the 2nd oil change at 500 miles I did change my oil 4 times before 1000 miles tho.

You were not the only one. I did the book break in as well. I just made sure to use as much engine breaking as I could to seat the rings.
