steering stablizer

hey guys and girls can someone actually help me and a friend of mine end this dispute. it seems people have different opinions on this issue. can anyone tell me what is the main purpose of a steering stablizer.. thanx motoheads

It's a steering damper, and it's supposed to help with headshake/ tank slappers. The name says it all, it's basically a piece of equipment that slows the steering. It's usually valved so that the quick/ jerky inputs on the bars or tire will slow down/ become more controllable.

What kind of bike do you have and what kind of riding do you do? You may already have one on there...

well i have an 02 gixxer 1000 and i ride street, but plan on attending a track day sometime in the future. do i have one already, cause it looks like it sorta

You do have one, they're mounted on the front of the frame at the neck, under the top triple clamp.

They're usually junk though after some time riding, so yours is probably not working, but it may be.

A good damper can be had used and found on Ebay pretty easily, as well as WERA forums in the classifieds.

I've got a couple of stock ones you can have.

For track days, with a liter bike, I'd get an aftermarket damper like Hyperpro.
