if you want a cheap helmet get a Scoprion.
Me and 2 of my friends ended up with Ex1000's and 2 of us started with Icon helmets. I tried on HJC, KBC nd others....and for the lower end price range Scorpion fit the best and was the best in safety ratings.

^^^^^ What he said. I wouldn't trade my X11 for anything except maybe a Arai Corsair or a Suomy.

X-11 all the way, if something happened to mine I wouldn't even look at anything else.

From what I understand, the RF1000 is a little quieter than the X11, but the feel is fantastic! I've never worn a helmet this comfortable in my life and I've probably owned 15-20 helmets in 25 years. I have my Icon Alliance SSR for when I'm just goofin around or want to rock something different, but the X11 is the one I wear 99.9 % of the time.

People always talk about helmet noise for good reason. The reality of the situation is give and take like anything else. If the helmet has good or great airflow (X11 and other high end helmets) it will be loud-because of airflow.
Less expensive helmet offers similar or same protection, less airflow=less noise and generally weigh more which is big deal on long multi-day rides.
Cheap earplugs make any helmet noise much better, don't bother you at all.

I'm the same as the other guys...... I bought the X11 because I liked it and it's a great helmet. there aren't many others that are better with the exception of some Arai's and Suomy's. The fit and feel were the other deciding factors. I'm not hatin on anyone that is smart enough to wear a helmet. I respect you for rockin the gear period! When I first got back into bikes, I bought an HJC. It was okay, but after trying on the X11, there was no comparison (to me). I am on a slow journey to upgrade to the best that I feel is necessary. The biggest thing is to look for the DOT rating, SNELL rating, fit, etc. Don't think that we're raggin on ya. You asked for our opinions, and that's what you got. We're just giving you choices and reasons behind why we personally chose what we did.

I have the rockhard hustler helmet which I'm almost positive is a kbc race helmet shell just renamed for rockhard, my only complaint is it fogs up really bad if your not moving. But I do like the way it feels better than my x11.

+1 to spending more on a nicer helmet. Try ebay for new lids that are a year or two old but still in the box. A local shop might have helmets that have been sitting for a year or two as well. See if they'll work with you on the price. All you have to do is look for the date of manufacture tag in the helmet.

I have a KBC "force RR" and I like it. I've rode with a few other helmets and I like this the most so far but I havent tryed Arai or Suomy. I will say its better than the HJC and the 707 that i've rode with

I got a cleaner from the boat show that is the ticket for that man. Let me know if you want to try it out on the shield. I did it on mine and it did not fog at all

A KBC helmet is going to hold up just as good as another in a crash.

If you want a more expensive helmet that looks like a tie-die shirt gone wrong but is possibly a hair more quiet, then look no further than expensive brands. I'm half-kidding with that comment, but as long as a helmet is DOT and SNELL approved, you can't go wrong.

Just get something in your price range and fits comfortably. Btw, I have the KBC with the light start on it as quoted earlier, so I may be a little biased. I just want to say that you don't need a $500+ lid to protect your noggin.
