Hopper to Tech 3?

Will Tornado Hopper Be John's Next Monster Move?
by dean adams
Monday, January 05, 2009

Current speculation in both the printed info and electronic media worlds seem to indicate that the fall-out from Kawasaki's decision to leave the MotoGP class immediately puts American Colin Edwards II at risk of losing his Tech Three Yamaha ride for 2009.

Speculation has it that if Kawasaki does leave MotoGP (there has as yet been no official announcement) that it will put John Hopkins back into open rider market and that Hopkins' relationship with Monster energy drinks could be used to ice Edwards from his ride. Meaning Hopkins would bring a Monster load of cash to Tech Three which would presumably boot Edwards from the team so that Hopkins and his money could be welcomed.

The above is an interesting bit of fiction but probably little more than that.

Why?

Edwards is a Yamaha guy

Colin Edwards was a Yamaha motocross support rider in his teens and had a Yamaha contract before he could actually legally sign a legal document. There is an enormous amount of history between Edwards and Yamaha and it's doubtful that Yamaha will set match to that, even in the current economic slump.

Edwards has a contract (one)

Edwards' contracted is written and signed. It would be completely out of character for Yamaha to try and negotiate a way for Hopkins to replace Edwards at this point. Beyond it being a major gamble, a move like that would destroy any confidence a rider has for the upcoming season.

Edwards has a contract (two)

Edwards made several public and on the record comments at the Laguna Seca USGP where he thanked Yamaha US for helping him get his new MotoGP contract. Based on Edwards' comments one could certainly assume that Yamaha US is supporting the factory's commitment to Edwards in MotoGP. They're not going to throw a hand grenade into a situation supported by their office in one of their biggest markets.

Regardless of who goes where.......I don't think either of the two riders will have a problem finding a ride.

Hopkins will have a problem finding a ride. He's been very non-productive since his rookie year imho.

That article could rank up there with the dumbest bit of Euro rumours I've heard. Why in the wide wide world of sports would Yami dump CEII when he as a new contract??? Besides, the World LOVES Colin, Hopper.... not so much.

Tech 3 Yamaha boss dismisses John Hopkins move
By Matthew Birt

MotoGP

05 January 2009 13:41

Tech 3 Yamaha team manager Herve Poncharal has categorically denied considering bringing in John Hopkins to partner James Toseland for the 2009 MotoGP campaign.

Rumours circulated that Hopkins was being considered an option to replace fellow American Colin Edwards in the French-based squad following the collapse of Kawasaki’s factory team during the Christmas break.

Hopkins is still waiting on an official announcement from Kawasaki about its plans, but he has been informed of Kawasaki’s intentions to quit with immediate effect.
Poncharal though has quickly quashed his hopes of a move to Tech 3 Yamaha.

He told MCN: “I saw this rumour on the internet, but there is no possibility of John being a Tech 3 Yamaha rider in 2009. We have signed contracts with James and Colin and they will be our riders for 2009, there is absolutely no doubt about that.

"Changing our line-up for the forthcoming season is simply not under consideration and not an option. We are very happy with James and Colin and we are looking forward to another successful 2009 season with both of them.”

I like Hopper because he's an American, but I wasn't so impressed with him when he appeared to be trying to "be more European". Pick one or the other for 's sake!

I think he could have done more with what he had- I felt bad that he had a bunch of injuries... but I just can't see him getting a top seat anywhere if he doesn't ride this year.

He seemed to be denying his American lineage and promoting his European lineage... it seemed that way anyway. Like he was trying to "buy street cred" by promoting his European side.

It's my perception though, I may be the only one!

Seemed that way more when he was on the Rizla bikes...
