That's a fuggin understatement, you have to grow gills to live there. And you know if someone who lived his whole life in Houston says that, it's huuuumid.

Yeah, I was there from August of 93 to August of 94. Right before I got there a marine who had befriended a local guy. Marine found out the guy was gay when the local hit on him, the marine killed the guy. So the locals were not happy.

Thailand was the bomb....got drunk and woke up on the beach in my boxers and one sock on. Stumbling back to the ship with shore patrol laughing at me.

Korea blew ....went to Mountain Survival School in Pohang with the ROK Marines and thought my hips would snap I was shivering so hard. BUT I learned that cat tasted like sweet and sour pork if cooked right. Chewy.

Hmm, I am not sure on that. I better find out. But from what I keep hearing with folks that are in the Air Force, they seem to love it and often stay in for a long time. But I believe it's 6 years active duty. ...I need to found out now to make sure.

So I am assuming bringing a laptop to the hotel is out of the question?
Im a 2A533D which is AWACS radar technician stationed at Tinker AFB oklahoma and as for being stationed in kadena its a high possibility

Prior Air Force 10-years 1C171.

Urban Ninja,

You might want to research what bases have tankers. You can't just get assigned to any base, if your job doesn't have a mission there. You will get some good TDY's to Germany and such but probably won't be based out of there. I don't know if they are still doing it but in the past if you were top 10% of your class you got to pick your base but that depends on a lot of things when you go through.

You'll have fun in Korea but don't get in trouble. Most people can't keep there head straight and get busted. The AF joke is "How do you make SSgt (E5) in Korea, go as a TSgt (E6)"....

My only other recommendation is get anything the recruiter tells you in writing. Don't let them talk you into some BS that you find out later isn't true.

Also, I wouldn't take a laptop with you to MEPS.

PM me with any questions...

Thanks. I will be sure to ask you whatever questions I may have. Just don't laugh if I ask you silly questions.

Well, as far as getting my pick of a particular base. A guy can cross his fingers, right? But I do know that they can pretty much send me wherever they want.

Most MOS schools will offer pick of the litter to either top graduate or the top 10% of the graduating class.

Remember, though....it pays to research your job selection. Get ahold of guys who currently do it or have done it.

Or better yet, look at the basic job description....then imagining doing it in the freezing rain...the most extreme heat....cold, tired, wet, hungry...blah, blah, etc., etc.. Then think if its something you want to do.

Any time man, no question is dumb IMO. You will be signing your life away for the next 4, 6, 10, 20+ years so you better make sure it's exactly what you want...

What I mean by the base is make sure the mission you would be doing is there. I thought I wanted Hawaii before I joined. I didn't know that ATC in Hawaii is DOD so I will never be stationed there unless I do another job. Sometimes it's hard getting great assignments in the aviation field because the Airfields are slowly getting closed...

Now you'll deploy a lot and get flight pay as a refuel-er so that will be a bonus...

I know it seems glorious, but there is nothing fun about possibly dying in some dilapidated cement room in the middle of some war torn country, gasping for breathe as you watch everyone struggle to keep you alive.

But I admire your enthusiasm.

Curious what made you decide you want to carry the SAW.

Thats not exactly an MOS, Saw Gunner....Its just one of four weapons thats assigned to a Infantry Fire Team. 2 M16s, 1 M203 and a SAW. Its up to the Squad Leader/ Platoon Sergeant who gets what weapon.

I usually notice its the bigger of the four guys in the Team.
