CL=scammers paradise
I was trying to sell an engine on CL and would get two to three emails a day from people wanting to buy it sight unseen. They were also were willing to pay the full asking price and even willing to include shipping fee in advance. All they asked is that I take a cashiers check for the amount. Problem is that the cashiers check is usually from some unknown bank from another state, so you couldn't cash it at a local branch. then they start asking for expedited shipping so you ship your item out with your money, to find out later that the cashiers check is fake. The old saying "if its to good to be true, it mostly likely isn't"

I guess I never finished my response earlier........ You can't blame Craigslist because you didn't research the purchase very well. I'm not trying to give you a hard time, but I have a lot of friends that buy from Craigslist on a regular basis, and they never have any problems. You have to know exactly what you're looking at and look into it very carefully before any money changes hands. You obviously have a good number on the guy since you called him to inquire about the bike. Couldn't you give that info to the police and not only get him what he deserves, but maybe get your money back? It really sux to lose the money, but at least it was $1000 and not a lot more! The only people that I wouldn't be VERY critical of when making a purchase are close friends...... everyone else will be fully researched. I can see where this could happen easily though. You REALLY wanted a bike that someone would be willing to owner-finance. The guy said he'd be willing to do it, so you went for it. Those situations lend themselves well to scams because of the sense of urgency or need that the prospective buyer is giving out. There are not many people that are legit that will let someone ride off on their sportbike with only an agreement and a few bucks down. They would be taking a BIG chance on you riding for a bit and wrecking the bike, then giving it back and they're stuck with the repairs if not a total loss. If I were selling a bike and didn't personally know the buyer, I would require them to bring the full purchase amount for the bike and sign a disclaimer that if they wreck or damage it, the sale is complete. Good luck with getting this all straighened out and don't hate on Craigslist.... Just do a LOT of research before the next purchase.

It's very easy to get into buddy. I get really into something and want to do whatever it takes to get it. I have to force myself to stand back and look at each situation very carefully. I've gotten now to the point where I don't start looking until I have enough money saved to be able to start looking around to buy what I want with cash in hand. There are some great deals out there, you just have to look and take your time. I met a guy yesterday that got a 2001 Kawi Z7-S in pretty good shape for $1500. I bought my '92 Gixxer 750 for $1900 off Craigslist. The deals are out there (not that mine was a totally GREAT deal), you just have to be patient. Also, be cautious about buying bikes that the seller says has been sitting up for a while and just needs the carbs cleaned and it doesn't run right now. Sometimes that is true, but why would you take less money for something because you won't spend $100 to have the carbs cleaned and synched? I'm on my 15th streetbike in 25 years and I've seen a LOT of good deals, but I've also seen a LOT of scams. Get a lawyer to look over all contracts/paperwork, and if you can't ride it, at LEAST pay to have a mechanic look at it. If the seller refuses to let you have a professional look at it, then they're probably hiding something. That $50-$100 could save you thousands!

No need to do that, going new I mean! There are alot of good used bikes on CL just take a little time and do your homework before you buy. I have bought all my bikes on CL and sold two and have never had a problem.

Also, go to Craigslist and put his phone number in the search bar. You might find that he's doing this with several bikes. If you search his number, it will bring up any current ads that he has up.
