to prevent the tank form getting scratches from your belt buckle, zipper, or buttons. when you tuck down or squeeze the tank with your legs you are usually all over the tank.

yo noob, i refer to that "sticker" as a tank pad, but I'm sure there are more appropriate terms for it. At least you wont have to walk into your local stealership and ask for a "sticker" now. Ride safe guys.
