i have sold 3 this year. i never let them test drive it, not even with cash.
I would have, if they had the M endorsement on license.

If I sell a bike, they have to have the M endorsement, have the cash in hand, leave their driver's license and sign a conditional bill of sale (in case of wreck or damage). I don't expect someone to buy a bike without riding it, but I don't want to have to pay to fix it if they screw it up or wreck it either. My friends could ride it all they want (of course they all have nicer bikes than mine, so they'd never want to). , I have a guy that works for me that asks me every day when I'm going to let him ride my bike. I always tell him "as soon as you have a $3500 deposit.

WTH was I thinking? Glad he came back to claim them
Better ask how long they have been married first, I might just leave mine and consider it a trade.

The problem that exists with just leaving collateral (like you car keys or something) is that if you drop it (the bike)and scratch it or blow the motor or something, the person can't legally keep your stuff as recourse. All you would have to do if they did would be to call the cops, prove the vehicle is yours and the cops would make them give back your keys. It would then become a civil matter, and you know how that goes. The only way I would do it, like I said before, is cash in hand and a conditional Bill of Sale that stated "if the vehicle is damaged in any way, or altered from the condition before the test-ride, the tester agrees to surrender the full purchase price for the vehicle". Even then it could get sticky.
