i turn off the fuel and let it run untill it starves out, or sometimes i just untape these two wires that go to the ignition............j/k! mostly i use the key.

I was taught, and I also taught my students to use the kill switch, then the key. When you come to a stop, say on an incline, you want tokeep both hands on the handle bars, maybe even holding the brake, so you just thumb the switch, put down your kickstand, and then you are safe to take you hands off of the bars and turn the key.....noobs!!!

The MSF class that I took suggested being in 1st gear when coming to a stop. This enables you to keep your hand on the front brake when killing the engine (use the kill switch) until the engine quits then you can let out the clutch and the bike won't roll. This works good in my driveway which is pretty steep.

I don't see why the kill switch would wear out any sooner than the ignition or sidestand switches.
