Question about title and vin?

Hey how's everyone doing?

I have a general question about a motorcycle I was looking at. It sounds kind of shady but it's an 07 gsx-r 600 for 3k. Looks in really good condition. The thing is that the guy says he has no title and the bike has no vin. Stolen? Any way to check other than the vin? He said he had the police department run in by the make, model, color and it came out clean. He also said that it was insurance job and they were going to scrap it but some shop got it and used two bikes to make one or something along those lines. If I had a vin I could go to the DMV or something and run it. Last thing I want is to buy someone elses bike that I'm sure they would like to see. lol

What do you guys think?

Thanks,
Jimmy

Stolen....

He should have had something to go by and a good story.

Fact remains, you couldnt ride it on the street, register, or insure it. As the track if the cops come through you have no proof you own it either...

this is the bike. Yeah I was thinking it might be stolen or something but wouldnt mind buying it without a title as long as I knew it was a clean vin.

was the frame replaced?

is there any damage where the vin should be as if it were taken off purposely?

Two bikes were used to make one so it could be that frame was replaced. I havent seen the bike in person so not sure how the vin looks on the frame. Just trying to see what I can do to make sure its not stolen before I make a long drive.

Yeah thats what I thought that it doesnt make sense that a shop would remove a vin from a frame.

The guy is located a few hours north of houston by dallas.

May not have been a shop. If it were a new frame then the placard cant be swapped over. They should at least have a couple VINs from the old bikes.

i never even look at the sticker or placard, i ONLY look at the steering head VIN where it is stamped into the aluminum. if its not there then i get really suspicious really fast!

The way it is supossed to work is the neck of the damaged frame is to be cut off and sent into the manufacture for a restamp of the original serial number. If it dont have the 17 digit vin stamped directly into the frame up around the steering head there is a fish out of water. If you can take a constable with you. They have the most jurisdiction also. They have the most up to date info. Call the theft division and set up a sting. They will know what to do. Dont let them tell you they dont have the buy money. They do. But you better be ready to buy if its legit.. Keep us informed will ya??
