Kyle just came out of surgery - his breathing tube has been moved to his neck and his feeding tube has been moved to his belly. No more tubes in his mouth and nose! He looks more comforable already.

The chest X-ray and scope showed lots of fluid in the lungs, so they are treating him for pnemonia until it is verified by the lab. They beleive the fluid was causing his discomfort last night. He is resting much better now.

We hope to try to wake him again later today.

Pelvic surgery is scheduled for 8:00am Thursday (unless there are emergency surgeries ahead of him). Should take about two hours. They've never seen an injury quite like his, so they may have to change their plan when they get in there. The orthopedics are also going to look at his hand to determine if it needs surgery or simply a splint.

Hand should take about 6 weeks to heal. If he did not have neurological injuries, he would be walking with a walker tomorrow! We'll just have to see how that goes.

He will be evaluated by a facial plastic surgeon in Greenville to determine if they will repair his jaw there or send him back to Spartanburg.

We were more comfortable in the Spartanburg ICU where the rooms are more private - Greenville has open rooms (too much information and observation of other patients for us!). So, we kind of hope he will transfer back for recovery.

We'll let you know how everything goes tomorrow. The internet connection at Greenville is scetchy, as is our cell service - so it may be late in the day. You have not forgotten about us, so we certainly won't forget to update you!!!

While so heavily medicated, he has only been able to respond to pinching his skin. He moves his hands to the pinched spot to try to stop it. Once his orthopedic injuries are repaired, we can work on getting the "real Kyle" back to us.

Without a doubt, I'd be attending a funeral this week if he hadn't been wearing his gear. He was wearing a jacket and gloves too!!! I'm just glad he had it all on (I think SC has a mandatory helmet law). At 19, there was probably a 50/50 chance you'd see me cruising with no helmet. I'm thankful he had on gear. No doubt that his gear has saved his life.

POST SURGERY UPDATE!!!!!!!!

They had to put a plate in the front of the pelvis and pins in the back. He will not be able to put weight on it for two months, due to the extent of the repairs needed. But, they are confident he will fully recover from this injury.

The fracture in his hand has a splint. Due to the extent of the pelvic surgery, they decided not to tackle any more today - thankfully!

Thanks again guys!!! The prayers are most definitely working. Here are a couple more updates from Saturday and Sunday!!! One more surgery set for tomorrow on his jaw and then he'll be surgery free for 4-6 weeks Minimum. He's also been taken off the ventilator, and just supplied pure oxygen from time to time.

They informed us that they will stop his nutrition IV at midnight and perform some other tasks to prepare him for surgery on his hand. It could still be called off, but it looks like they are going to try. If they can get his hand done, hopefully it will clear the way for the jaw repair Monday. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

It looks as though his surgery for today is up in the air. We do know the Ear, Nose, & Throat specialist is coming to look at his jaw today and still hopefully book that for tomorrow. His hand is really minor as far as the remainder of repairs go.

The lead trauma team doctor spoke to us and indicated that he could be in a private room by the end of the week. She will also start sending out a list of his rehab requirements to brain injury rehab facilities that can handle his needs.

Surgery on his jaw is tentatively planned for Tuesday morning. They will have to put a plate inside the front of his lower jaw, which will remain indefinately. The jaw will be wired shut for 4 - 6 weeks which will be ample time for the second break to heal on it's own. If they get in there and see the second break has changed since the last x-ray, that would also require a plate to repair.

We're very optimistic that this week is going to shape up well for Kyle! With all the surgeries out of the way, he can get comfortable and start moving toward recovery.

We are having a hard time adjusting to the regular room. He no longer needs the ICU care, but he needs more attention than other patients due to the range of issues.

We've been taking shifts staying with him, and the staff is more in tune to his needs now. He's been responsive today, even after the surgery.

He was able to indicate that he knew he was in the hospital, so communication is starting to open up for him. That will make it so much easier for us to take care of him!
