How to: Polish a Vol. 1

I've been putting around on my stock(other than china carb) 1980 Honda CT70 for a while now and decided it's time for a budget build. My ultimate goal is to get a bonded title and street registration so i can have a neighborhood beater/trail rider capable of ~50 MPH. i figured i would start a "How To" build thread to show others what is available for less than $750. The tear down process started last night with the removal of the stock wheels/tires. These are headed to Your Powdercoating Connection for a coat of blood red and will eventually be wearing dirt tires. The Billets i have will get a set of bridgestone hoops for asphalt assault. Not sure on final color choice yet, but it will probably be a Flat/Gloss black combo with either red or polished wheels depending on trim. Pictures of the tear down and current condition will come soon. Current build total is : 1980 Honda CT70 in running(but rough) condition $300 E-bay billett wheels/sprockets/chain/bearings/seals $75 = $375
More parts to come. I plan to have this wrapped up and back together by spring break, and street legal within 6-9 months.

Here's how this 28 year old bike looked when i picked it up. . .and this is in running/rideable condition. . .

got pushed back again, that Valero has some issues When the phone rings we'll gear up and fly out!!! Looks like I'll be headed to Saudi soon too, kinda excited.

Back on topic, looks like i snagged that brand new GPX 125 from yellowjacket so I'll definately be in the ~50MPH range in no time

Not practical for an offroad application, but they sure look good! My research tells me that some of the newer Pitster Pro and OGM pitbike exhaust pipes will work, and i can snag a new "take off" pipe for $50 shipped, not a bad price at all IMO.

How is that "running" condition when it's missing the carb?!

I have an 79 old mini trail 50 in my dad's shed that I'm going to restore once I get a garage. I learned how to ride on that thing when I was 4.

yes, 125. I got that pic from www.planetminis.com under the Z50, CT70 section. unfortunately there is no more info on the bike, those pics were posted for a non member, no info was provided. I know these bikes well though, if you have a question just ask. . .

and for those following this thread, I'll get more pics up when i get back in town from Valero Three Rivers. I've got the bike torn down to the frame, now i need to start sanding, priming, and painting. i was out of town working(as usual) and missed the 12-8-08 cutoff date to have my wheels to YPC for special price PC work. Gonna switch gears a little bit and do more of a "restomod" instead of rat rodding it. I kinda like the ugly Tahitian Red that Honda painted this bike in 1980, some polishing should clean it right up!!!
