MotoGP: Pedrosa fastest in Jerez test

REPSOL HONDA'S Dani Pedrosa has ended the day at the top of the timesheets during MotoGP winter testing at Jerez.

Pedrosa, aboard a 2009 Honda RC212V, posted a fastest lap of 1:39.425, over 0.5 seconds quicker than reigning MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi. The Italian topped the leaderboard in the early afternoon but was overhauled by the Spanish Smurf during chilly conditions at Jerez.

Dani Pedrosa - Repsol Honda

“They resurfaced the whole track in August and the new asphalt is very grippy and smooth, so I was able to do some good lap times despite the cold temperatures and the strong winds which we had to deal with. Today we focused mainly on the engine, but the low temperatures meant that we started quite late this morning and stopped quite early this afternoon, so I need another day of testing to give a better evaluation of the latest engine configuration which is quite different from before. We also did some work on electronics, working to improve corner-entry performance and so on, but I think we need some more time on the motorcycle to really understand this latest engine configuration.”

Valentino Rossi couldn't match Pedrosa's pace in afternoon session. The Italian completed 20 laps on the 2008-spec bike and 20 on the new 2009 prototype M1, on which he set his fastest lap of the day in a time of 1'40.135.

Valentino Rossi - Fiat Yamaha

"I am happy about this first day because my performance has been good from the beginning and I have been fast all day. Unfortunately it's been quite cold and there was only three hours when it was possible to go fast, but we were able to get quite a lot of work done in this short space of time. We have tried some different things on the old 2008 bike and we were able to make some improvements and then we also tested several new things on the prototype bike, and I am happy because I did my fastest lap with this bike. Bridgestone have brought good tyres here; so far I don't see any problems with the new rule and it seems they're doing a good job. They have resurfaced the track and it has made a big difference; they have got rid of all the bumps and like this it's great fun to ride around. I think we will be able to go faster now. Today was very cold, especially with the wind so now I hope it's a bit better tomorrow and that it doesn't rain because we have a lot more work to do and I would like to improve my lap time a bit more.”

Rossi's team-mate Jorge Lorenzo posted the third quickest time of the session, a second down on Rossi. The Spaniard spent the day on the 2008 bike, working on adapting his set-up to the new Bridgestones, ahead of next year's one-make tyre rule.

Jorge Lorenzo - Fiat Yamaha

“Overall today has been a good day, even if the cold weather hasn't allowed us too much time on track. It's only my second day testing since the new tyre rule and I think we're doing a good job so far, but we still have to improve because we're not yet sure of the perfect configuration for our bike with the tyres. We are still using the 2008 bike with the old setting at the moment, I have a test bike with some new parts but we didn't use it today - maybe tomorrow. Anyway I feel good because I can see that we have the potential to improve more. The new track surface is a lot better, there are fewer bumps and so you can go faster and ride more how you want to. This is a good improvement to the track. Tomorrow it seems there is a chance of rain but I really hope not because we have a lot to do and! I would like to leave here having improved further. This is a very important test because it's the last one until February, when we will have a new bike, so we need to gather as much information as possible for the engineers.”

Britain's James Toseland impressed by setting the sixth fastest time of the day. The Tech 3 Yamaha rider posted a best time of 1:41.539 - 0.2 secs behind his American team-mate, Colin Edwards.

Not even in a factory bike Dovi can beat Lorenzo. Is going to be a great season.

Dude, this is his first time on the 2009 spec factory RCV and his second time on Bridgestones... he beat Lorenzo several times in 08 and was WAY more consistent, so a blanket statement like that just isn't accurate.

BTW, it's great to see Nicky knock off some serious time from yesterday... hopefully he continues to keep dropping those times.

Too bad this is the last we'll see of MotoGP until February.

I realize most won't or didn't notice, but unfortunately this is not a complete assesment for the 09 season as Suzuki and Kawisaki are testing in Australia.

Yeah I am really digging the black and grey Yami scheme and Elias' livery looks really sweet. I can't wait for next year.

+1 on Lorenzo having more points than Dovi next season. I think Lorenzo is going to be a force.

You're on...

Personally, I hope they both have great years so that we can get some more competition for Valentino and Casey next year.

Apparently the times I found for Team Suzuki from this weekend (day2) were innacurate. Sorry for the inconvience.

Here are the corrected times.

Capirossi 1’30.9
Vermeulen 1’31.1
