+1 on karosene. some say its to messy but personally I haven't found but a few things that do as good a job as a little bit of karosene and a grunge brush. Only takes a few mins and presto. Yes is a lil more work and more messy then spraying on a rag but its cheaper and does a really good yob. And I usually clean and lube chain and wash the bike at the same time so I just clean the chain then wash the bike then relube it.
