The box for MSF is 20 by 60ft, 24ft wide with the dashed line. You might start with 24 but personally, I prefer a tighter box

find a parking lot. turn the idle up on your bike alittle, and just roll around on idle at like 5mph. get used to how the bike handles going that slow. then turn the idle back down to stock and ride around for a bit to get used to it. try doing figure 8s and circles in small areas. challenge yourself, it will come to you.

Perv, you took that completely out of context . I was just supplying the official dimensions because it's been a while since we took the MSF.

When you see it again after a couple years it's easy to remember how small that box was when you were working in it but you tend to forget all about the clutching, weight and steering issues you had to deal with.

+1 for riding at idle in a parking lot, BTW, low speed handling practice FTW!

I'm sure there will be a third and fourth as well as a 20th... At least now I KNOW I can pick it up.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to practice!

don't feel so bad, in 20 or so years of riding i have dropped every one of my bikes, either in the garage or something like what you did. i tell everyone who asked me about crashing or dropping a bike:

it is not a question of if, it is a question of when!

it is just so embarrassing to do it in front of other people. i hate it when that happens.

find a empty parking lot and practice all the slow bike moves like figure 8, circles etc.

you could try turning your back towards the bike, bend your legs and pressing your against the seat, grabing the rear of the bike with the left hand and the handle bar with your right hand. use your legs to lift the bike. seen a little gal pick up a gold wing that way.

my 2 cents later,

Here's what I did to practice slow, sharp turns when the stores across the street from me were out of business and their parking lots went unused for a while.

Find empty parking lot on level surface. Try to do sharp u-turns in a space of about 2 parking spaces wide at slow speeds. Or if there is space in the lot, try to do figure 8's in a space about 2 parking spaces wide by 2 parking spaces long.

Oh yeah, be sure to look out for the bozo that wants to cut across the empty lot to avoid a traffic light or to avoid turning on an actual street corner.

I made it out of the garage just fine today. I am beginning to realize I have much better control when my feet are up on the pegs, and not trying to 'catch' the bike. Why is that?
