I think they're less necessary for bouncing off of the ground and more for mid-air collisions with other divers.

My questions is... Why are the other 2 dudes holding onto his waste? Is that a noob thang?

I think the helmets also have to do with knockin your noggin while your departing the aircraft.

They're holding on to my waist because it was my first jump. It's basically a stability thing. If i depart the plane and i start tumbling and can't recover... I'm dead. lol. They're just there to make sure that don't happen. hehe
