Another title warning of a different type

Thought I would pass this along to bike buyers...

I bought a bike a few weeks ago from an out-of-town private seller.

Paid for it. Got the clear blue title, bill of sale, and the title transfer all signed and ready to go.

Went into the tax office yesterday and ...

FAIL

she said "he didn't sign it right".

The title reads first name middle initial last name. He signed and wrote his name on the back using first initial, middle initial, last name. So now I have to get him to send me an affidavit that says JB Doe is the same as John B Doe. Arrgghhh!

Of course I waited until the last possible day (20 business days) to register it so now I will have to pay a fine and a penalty

So learn from my mistakes (I make a lot of them so there should be a lot of learning going on here). When you buy the bike remind the seller to sign the title EXACTLY as the name appears on the front. Also sign the bill of sale and the title form the EXACT same way.

He dated it when he signed it so not much I could do. Besides the responsible thing to do is to pay all of your taxes and fees on time. Never lie to the government, right?

I date the title when I sell a vehicle so that it gets it out of my name. I also keep a copy of the bill of sale that I have the buyer sign as backup.

Not a GSXR.

It's a GSX (no R) 650F - a sport touring motorcycle. Which is the full-faired replacement for the Bandit.

pretty mild-mannered and forgiving to ride (I need all the help I can get):

85bhp @ 10500rpm
46lb-ft Torque @ 8900rpm

But it IS a Suzuki

Dating a title doesnt always get it out of your name. There are forms for that. If they dont reg. it, it stays in your name. I saw a bike on CL a guy was selling. It was still in my name. He didnt transfer and I never mailed in the form I had him sign.

I realize that, but dating it may "encourage" them to get it done quickly to avoid the fines, etc.

I have my copy of the bill of sale if something goes down like red light tickets or toll violations, etc.

Try going to the Conroe tax office off 105, they are generally a lot more lenient than anywhere else I've been.

According to the tax lady from yesterday - its two parts - $25 for each 30 days past due + 5% of the sales tax. But I agree, in the world of government fees and fines its pretty minor.
