well leaving the key on the on position for to long can drain the battery quickly, take a peek inside the fuel tank, under the fairings see if anything is loose

If I understand what you are saying you were turning the throttle at the same time as cranking. If that is what you were doing then that could be the problem.
As soon as you crack the throttle it kills either the spark or the fuel injectors (I forget which). The only way you can start an injected bike is to keep your hand off the throttle while cranking.

A little WD-40 in the ignition switch can work wonders. Just a tiny squirt.

bumble bee can you flood the enigne by crocking the throttle? on fuel injector bike that is on carborated you need to some times, as for the red switch, it shoudl not make a diff, i usually hit the switch than turn it off but thats not your problem,
