Steering damper question.....

Ive been looking at getting a steering damper for my 2001 929RR.....Found a few good deals on some used ones....Should I get a slightly used one of another 929 or get new ? Why or why not ?

Chill out and wait longer than an hour for people to respond.

Used is OK if you get a deal on one that hasn't been damaged. If it's not a great deal, then I would buy new, personally.

If you buy used, make sure all the brackets and bolts come with it. Otherwise you'll have to buy them seperately and you might not save much in the end.

If you get a used one, make sure you look it over good for seapage or leaks. I am actually about to slap a slightly used GPR V4 dampener on my busa....hopefully it works well. I have heard that if you get the Hyperpro, make sure you get the RSC model, it supposed to be a lot better. Ofcourse Ohlins is always good.

What kind of riding are you doing that makes you think you need one? Just asking, cuz for the average fart-around-town bike, there's really no point.

Agreed. I used to have a 954 and was looking up "tank slappers" and when I first started riding. By the time I had read how notorious the 929 and 954's were for slappers, I was scared to death and bent on buying one.

Obviously not scared enough, cuz I never spent the $375+ and NEVER had an issue riding streets and backroads.

I just found a used one for my r6 a few weeks ago because I was starting to get some serious head shake and what not. Figured a dampner would fix that, it DID NOT. I still get them.

My understanding is that until you are silly fast, that they dont serve much of a purpose. The dampner actually acts as steering input during a slapper which is not what you want.

Of course, this is all second hand information that was passed along to me. What is first hand information, is that I STILL get mini slappers after I installed the dampner which leads me to believe that there is something I am doing that I need to change.

Anyway, that's all dude. I always see people saying, first mod, DAMPNER! The really fast guys say otherwise. Other people just relay what they read. I prefer listening to the fast and experienced dudes that I have SEEN ride.

so very true !!! I want to get one cause I read the same thing about the 929's and yes it scares me cause Ive had it happen on a gixxer....and they have dampers now that I think about it.....Im not going to spend the money for a new one but if I can get on at a resonable price Ill do it....thanks for the input and if you trust the really fast guys that youve seen be really fast Ill listen to that over what Ive read !!!!! thanks CDILL35
