Sprockets

Okay is the more or less teeth on the front that increases your top speed?

and why change the front sprocket?

More teeth on the front sprocket will increase your top speed.

Why change the front sprocket you ask. Well because it is worn.

dude wont that 900RR go like.. at least 160? why would you need that? lol.. if anything i'd drop -1 in the front and make it get there faster. more acceleration = more fun anyway. you dont need top end for anything other then the track. and im sure your bike wont pass tech =P jk

for the 900?

it takes torque to turn an overdrive system... so your acceleration will be lessened but you may increase a little top end by going up on the front sprocket.

I believe dropping one tooth in the front only takes off 10mph at 160.

Depends on the bike whether it'll increase your top speed or not. Less teeth increases gear multiplication. On a 600 that can't hit the limiter in 6th because of wind resistance, you might actually increase your top speed. On a bigger bike, you're going to decrease top speed becuse you'll hit the limiter sooner.

Sprockets will give the biggest change on a bike for acceleration.

1fastchevy just put a -1 front on his... ask him what he thinks about it... was done just before the forest ride.

the stunters w experience can verify, but I believe -1 in the front is almost the same as +3 in the back(but you should be able to adjust out for the sprocket change in the front vs buying a new chain for the rear.)

The two ways you have it worded give you two different answers....

To gain a higher MPH, but lose some acceleration (disregarding all resistance and power needs) you would increase the number of teeth in the front and decrease the number of teeth in the rear. Depending what changes you make this will put more load on your motor and might not even increase your top MPH due to not having the power and gearing needed for the given drag.

To gain more acceleration, but lose some top end MPH you would lower the amount of teeth in the front and raise the amount of teeth in the rear.

Go ride a bicycle with gears and shift a few times and you'll understand this better.
