No Brands World Superbike In '09 ?

The provisional World Superbike calendar was released by the FIM over the weekend and shockingly the Brands Hatch WSBK round is missing from it.

It's known that FG Sport and Brands Hatch were in deep negotiations for the '09 event but statements by Brands Hatch to the BBC indicate that the sanction fee was judged to be too high and they have passed on the race for '09.

Brands Hatch is one of the--if not the--most successful World Superbike rounds currently on the calendar. Crowds that topped over sixty thousand in the mid-1990s have grown in leaps and bounds--Brands' Friday crowd has topped 100k in recent years according to press reports.

Is Brands really off the 2009 schedule or are the parties still negotiating for an event still nine months away? Unknown, but there is a gigantic hole in the 2009 WSBK schedule right where a Brands event would customarily slot in.

As both a racetrack and event the Brands Hatch WSBK round remains a Soup favorite.

In other WSBK series news: Kyalami returns to the schedule for 2009 with a date preceding the Miller USA round in May.

An Italian round is scheduled for September 27 but the circuit is listed as TBA. This has been been Vallelunga's round for the last two years. Does this mean a return to Imola is possible? Imola was undergoing massive construction and rebuilding and it's unknown if the track could be ready for motorcycle racing in time.

Dang, that's kinda weird...

Imola was a cool track to watch races though, I thought.

Although Palmer, the Chief Executive for MSV, accepts that WSBK organisers FG Sport are there to run a business, he doesn't consider it viable to pass on the increased fee demand to the spectators.

“Of course it is very disappointing not to have World Superbikes on the calendar for Brands Hatch next year but I have not been able to agree terms with the promoters of WSB, the Italian-based FG Sport company, run by Paolo and Maurizio Flammini,” he said.

“It is obviously their business to obtain the highest fees possible from circuits for having a WSB event but unfortunately FG Sport has demanded a fee over twice as much as MSV paid in 2008, which seems strange given the very obvious global economic crisis.

“I have made it very clear to FG Sport that we would be delighted to welcome WSB back to Brands Hatch in 2009 but despite considerable negotiation over many weeks the substantially increased offer I made to FG Sport was not acceptable to them.

“The increase in FG Sport's fee is equivalent to an extra £15 ($28.00) on the price of every race day ticket and we believe that such an increase would not be acceptable to fans in any year, let alone in today's difficult climate.
shame,

I wonder if a certain racer's death has anything to do with this?

What would have been... if Colin would have stayed in WSBK. Could you imagine the last 5 years w/ Haga, Bayliss, Corser, Toseland AND Colin still there? It was bad enough w/o him, I wish he would have stayed...
