954 big bore kit?

Has anyone seen one? I'm looking for more power. I was thinking about a new(er) 1k, but I dont want to give up the suspension mods I have. I like the way the bike feels and handles, it just feels slow after the ZX10.

Option 1:

Call Jay at APE.....I bet they have something for it. I am not sure if your cylinder is made into the upper case or not but.....if it is, you will have to completely dissassemble the engine, send the cases to Millenium to have them bored and replated. I am sure Jay at APE can get you a set of JE pistons for it. Not sure how much you can bore one, probably at least 2mm over. Get the compression up to 12.5-13 to 1. Ofcourse you will need to have the head ported, a good valve job and a set of better cams to get any power out of it. I bet you could get 170-180rwhp out of it with the right combo..... Just be prepared to spend the $$$. You are talking $3-4k for a motor like that and thats if you do it yourself.

Option 2:
Keep your stock bottom end, send the head out for porting and good valve job, install some good cams, thin head gasket and mill the head some to get the compression up. Get a GOOD exhaust system on it and a good tune in it and that should pick you up about 15-18rwhp. Good gains but still some pretty significant $$. Prolly about $2k for that.

Speed ain't cheap, thats for sure.

Here is the honda piston chart. I didn't see one on there for the 954 so you will have to call them on it. Talk to Jay and tell him what you want to do. He can set you up on everything....

Another option would be to look in the later model 1000RR engines and swap one in there. Not sure about the mounts, ecm, harness or anything but its probably worth looking into. I think they maybe about 15hp more then a 954 and you could probably do the swap for under $2500 for everything. Just do some research. None of its cheap though. Cheap, REAL horsepower doesn't exist. You are probably best off just getting a GOOD full exhaust system, an ignition module, PCIIIusb and a GOOD custom map. Then play with sprockets. That will get you a decent gain for a lot less money. Going up +2 on the rear will only increase your cruise rpms by about 300-400rpms on the highway yet get you a decent acceleration gain. Gearing definetly makes it "Feel" faster.

You could always put a dry nitrous kit on it for weekend fun also...

I would love to get a new 1000rr or Zx10. The only problem is that I already have an Ohlins shock, race tech valved forks, and scotts dampener on this bike. It would probably cost me more to bring another bike's handling up to par than it would to get more out of this one.

yeah there is something to be said for the new bikes handling and performance right out of the box....not to mention they are under warranty and ready to go but......

I am all for building something a little different..... A bit of a "sleeper" if you will. But you have to keep in mind that when you start modding them heavily, is gonna happen, its just par for the course, its never gonna be as reliable as a stock one.

Years ago I helped a buddy do a 1055cc kit in a ZX9. We had the Muzzy pistons, cams, pipe, also he had sent the head to Lazer for porting and we put some Keihan 41mm FCR carbs on it. That bike made 165rwhp and was KILLING people on the street. No one knew what was in it and we never had a problem with it other then it ran a little hot in town.. Always fun to do your own thing and be different. Thats why I still roll an old school 01 Gixxer 1k. Eventually, it will get "the treatment" but for now, I have it highly tuned and its making 155rwhp(which is pretty good for an old one w/ stock motor), it weighs 430lbs full of fuel and is reliable as can be. It will probably stay like this for a while as the busa keeps me busy enough.

i won the over-all CMRA Endurance roadracing championship in 2003 on a 954. then the next year i rode a friends new 1000rr. HOLY !!!! what a difference. the thing rode like a cadillac on steroids. fast, smooth and easy to ride. i now ride an 06 1000rr and it pretty much hangs with my buddy Jeffro's 08 ZX10 on the straights at TWS (Texas World Speedway). i ride my 1000rr with stock forks & Penske triple clicker shock. the stock damper on the 1000rr is plenty good. no reason to replace it
