Funny thing happened to me at lunch today...

So I am out in Autin at a place on 290 East called N-line Equipment. They make traffic signs/equipment and while I'm talking to the guy who's helping me he asks me why I am buying a traffic sign holder and I tell him that I work with a motorcycle school and we get to talking. He first thinks it's like an MSF thing, but I tell him no it's a school at a track. Yada...yada...yada he tells me he grew up in Conroe, TX and this guy he knew in high school who was a big motorcycle racer. He hung out with him socially, parties, beer drinkin, etc.

So he says, "His name was Colin Edwards. Do you know who that is?"

I say, "Oh yeah, I know who that is."

He says, "Is he still racing? I never really knew what he did after high school..."

Yea I think I've heard of him too... I'm pretty sure he kept racing.

What did the guy say when you told him what his old buddy Colin is up to now?

I told him thaat he is definitely still racing and I emphasized that he was a 2-time WORLD champion and that he was currently racing in the premier "league" in the world now. But it still didn't garner much of an expression change from the guy. Not really his fault I guess. Causal sports fans in the US don't know any better.

Try telling him how much money he's making now playing on motorcycles. That usually raises an eyebrow or three....

I hear Colin can't even walk the streets in Europe without getting mobbed paparazzi style. Bet he likes spending time back home. I recall a story about Michael Schumacher and how he likes vacationing in the USA because he's not well known. He was in Dallas and stopped by Texas Motorspeedway to take a ride at one of those NASCAR type schools. He sits down in the and his driver introduces himself... and he replies, nice to meet you, I'm Michael Schumacher.

there's a similar story in the UK of Schuey being pulled over for speeding.
the PO approaches his car and says,
"well well well, what have we here, Michael schumacher are we sir???
"Yup" comes the reply!!!!!!!
An autograph later and the matter was dropped.

I recall when Colin Edwards (who is as you say hugely popular in Europe) was driving his motorhome to Brands Hatch in Kent for a WSBK round and at the gates he was refused entry because he wasn't able to show his pass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Story goes a fan appeared and showed the guard the weekend program inc features on the balding motorhome driver
