This is ridiculous, if you're not doing anything wrong, why not just comply with the request?

You tell them even politely "no" in any form, and they will just wait for you outside the gates, problem solved on their end, and yours will just be beginning.

Jeez.
although i somewhat agree in your comment tom....and i probably would just show the law dawgs my proof of ownership just to make them happy and go away.....this quote comes to mind when you ask what's the harm in showing them proof....

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

- Benjamin Franklin

because it is exactly whats going on with our airports among other places....a little off topic, but i just wanted to throw in my 2 pennies. the government pretty much owns us because we let them.

Well, can't argue with Ben Franklin, but it's way extreme in relation to this situation IMHO. I think your airport example and other inconveniences are more relative than what his quote references.

Look, I wouldn't like it any more than anyone else; however, I would be more upset with the yahoos that caused me the inconvenience, i.e. the bike and parts thieves! Unfortunately, some of the folks convicted for things like this are way too close to home, and we're the ones who ultimately suffer for their indiscretions.
