I pretty much had to just wipe it off as I worked on it - I didn't want to pressure wash or use even a water hose in the beginning because the engine had a big hole in the pan, and I wasn't sure what else on the engine may have been damaged. I did not want water in the engine.

First thing was to determine the damage to the engine - if the engine had serious internal damage - bike was surely not worth fixing. Engine had asphalt inside the damaged pan and in the left (alternator) cover which was also damaged.

To remove the pan the ENTIRE exhaust system had to come off - all the way to the head, then the pan. Once the pan was off I pulled the pickup tube and the oil pressure relief valve - dissassemble / inspect clean and reassemble. I removed the left side cover while the pan was off, and that gave me a very good way to clean and inspect the internals.

Once the engine was back together and running - it was safer from a mechanical standpoint to clean it a little more aggressively.

Yes I did the majority of the work myself - I had a friend help me a little bit several evenings, he is an accountant by day, but enjoys getting out of the office (he was around at the end and helped me put the plastics on).
