don't know what your doing right or wrong, but you need to impress younger riders "to ride their own ride" or not ride w/ you, cuz this outcame was "good" next time may not be.........

i;m sure you did, and there's really no way to convince them to do the right thing, but the time you go on a ride , and somebody dies, your actions will change.

I had that happen to me back in May 2000... a fellow rider I was riding with up in NY crashed into a gaurdrail at 120mph. Split him in two at the waist. I was the first person to the scene of the accident. The injuries were horrific, obviously, but the worst part was that his helmet came off... he was staring straight at me.

Still to this day, that's the absolute worst thing I've ever experienced along with the day my mom told me she had cancer (thank the Lord she overcame it though).

That is one of the reasons I try to enforce the whole ride safe on the street portion... I mean, litterally, 5 minutes earlier I was making plans with that guy to work on my bike the following weekend. Still so sad...

You can't get mad at Syd. He did his part by tellin him ride at your own pace. Everyone has common sense, and it's up to them to use it. Plus, like the guy said, he wasn't riding fast to keep up with him, he rode fast to pass up the truck. Yeah, it may be a lil tempting to keep up with the faster guys, but it's up to the rider to check his ego at the door, and not try to show off.

...actually i want a powerwheel. im gettin my kid a escalade one for xmas, i might drive it more than him.

but for real. you can tell new riders to ride their own pace. they dont know what that is. even if they stay way behind you it might be too fast.

first time i hit the twisties all i had under my belt was an MSF class and a mere 50 miles. i was on a bike that was probably too powerful and heavy for a beginer an 86 vfr 700. i also had about a pitcher of beer, a few mixed drinks, and about a 1/4 gallon of red bull in my gut. S-M-R-T!

oh and who was i following? my buddy with 10 yrs experience on a 88 gsxr750. basicly he became my mentor, but we had barely rode together then. oh and who else? HIS mentor, a former CMRA badass, with about 20+ yrs riding, him on an 02 gsxr1000. they told me to "ride my own pace" meanwhile the 88 was trying to prove himself by keeping up with the old man.

we made the ride at night, on a fairly challenging backroad, with lots of blind turns and fast switchbacks. i thought i was going to die. i was even trying to "ride my own pace", but i also wanted to keep at least their taillights in sight, i didnt want to get lost. im not sure if ive ever leaned a bike over as much as i did that night.

basicly what im saying is could have ended up a statistic very easily. i got lucky. not everyone does. so if your gonna ride with newbies, let them set the pace, at least at first.

thats my $0.02

what i want to know is how did somebody crash at crabb road (im guessing) where there are nothing but sweepers? maybe the rider should sharpen up on the basics like the "look where you wanna go and lean" drill.

well...not to say anything bad about you Syd (you know we cool man), but some of the times i've rode w/ you, and you're leading the pack, you take off when the rest sometimes can't follow...and that makes the person left behind try to play catch up. On the other hand, the person playing catch up should have enough sense to know what their limit is....I'm no expert nor have i been riding for long, but I'm able to speak from previous rides i've been in...whether i've been in the back or front of the pack

when you ride the twisties thats OK but when your cruising the city then I uderstand to wait for your group.

if I go out ill lead the goup to the start of the twisties, then I take off at high speed, and wait for them at a stop later on.

yep...I know the drill. But if you have this guy that's new to all this, it can play a part on how he handles his bike. Like I said, Syd and I are cool...just a comment I made. Other dude should've know not to pass a car right before a turn if he doesn't know how to take one...
