Hey guys, sorry about the out of focus pictures. I had the camera set on auto and on manuel and to me they looked the same, but I ended up taking the pictures out of auto because you guys were flying by and auto took longer to process. Maybe next time when I can play with the camera a little more they can come out clearer. Sorry again!THIS IS CRYSTAL, NOT CODY. HE FORGOT TO LOG HIMSELF OFF AND I DON'T FEEL LIKE FCKN WITH HIM.

It's a big digital slr with a 3x telephoto lens. It doesn't have "sports" mode.. I set it on auto program mode. Next time I will bring the tripod and set the shutter speed appropriately.

FWIW Tripods don't work well. Best bet is to pan and shoot. I run a Rebel XT DSLR with a 75-300mm and sports mode works great since I can snap 5-6 photos one after another of a rider passing by. I don't know all the technical aspects of it (that would be my ol lady). But I set it on sports mode and it takes some great photos.

Ok ... you don't need Auto mode (remember A is for Amateur, M is for Master ) or sports mode or whatever. Set the camera to M, figure out what aperture works best at the given light and at at least 1/500 speed. Set your AF to continuous so that you can "tack" on an object and follow. Use the longest lens you have that allows you to move slower than with a shorter lens. IF your camera is not the fastest one shoot jpg vs. raw.
The faster the lens, the better since it allows you to use shorter shutter speeds. IF you can't get faster than 1/500 at your current ISO speed, use a faster one. Most cameras today do just fine at ISO400. I often shoot at 1600 with the 5D and it's great.

If you have questions about cameras I'll be more than happy to help. I don't shoot action sports but people (see my homepage for details).
I'll be at GSS riding this Saturday but there's enough "off" time.

Mike

i usually shoot in "P" program mode first and snap a few photos to see what the camera says it should shoot , then I will adjust "S" or "A" mode depending on what im shooting.

for bikes just crank that shutter speed up like everyone has said
