Idle problem

After ridinig for about 20 min then come to a stop my bike will stay idling about 2,000rpm's for a few seconds then come down. But yet sometime it wont come down at all.Now the other day I got off the freeway and when I got to the light it was up at 3,000 and never did come down, even stayed up at other stops till I got home.....Any ideas whats causing this and how to fix it.

Could it be the cable even if it is not doing it all the time only after riding for a while?

is your bike carb. or f.i ??? if it's carb then carbs some how gets gummed up inside (power - enrichment circiuts clogged)...now you may first check choke lever-cable-linkages makes sure nothing binding or sticking ,next may try some fuel additive like sea foam...and if problem gets worse then you may contact Patrick at Motorcycles Unlimited.may need carbs works-synchronize-fine tune....g/l man, keep up post

99 R1 is a carb bike and I agree, this fuel we are getting is really messing with carb bikes

Weather/heat index can also play apart on idle quality. I have to keep adjusting the idle on my busa to be within the perfect range, or deal w a slightly higher idle when its hot.

I understand alittle bit of a high idle but 3,000 rmp's. The throttle is turned all the way back but still idles high.

the idle screw on the side of the engine is turned all the way out? snap the throttle after each adjustment while the bike is hot.

If the idle is not improving, you have an air leak to the airbox.

the idle screw opens up the throttles a little w a set screw. The additional air is what causes the rpms to increase AND slowly come down when snapping the throttle closed. there is also an adjustment for the throttle rail if that needs to be tampered with. But firstly, make sure the idle adjustment connects to the cable/set screw. May require some visual inspection w the tank or side fairing off.

on the katana, its on the left side in the upper vent

yes, i have 98 katana 600 -idle kept racing high, more offen when exit free way come to local traffic.we had to like "power stall"engine to bring idle down and problem was 3 carbs got stuck in "choke circuit"-some air bleed passages got clogged.you may see/notice problem when hook up mercury sticks to carbs vaccum reading / drop....i just keep add fuel additive to tank all the time

Still idle's high. The over heating problem occured when the radiator house broke.Luckily this chick at a red light saw it leaking and told me about it.So it was only hot for a short time (less than a min) then I killed it and coasted into a drive way.
