Bike disabled on the Katy I-10 HOV lane

Yesterday while returning back from the office I found this fellow rider on the side of the road. I decided to stop and check what was going on and he mentioned that the bike just died and was not turning back on. He explained that he was already waiting for the Progressive Road side assistance wrecker but that it was going to take at least 45 minutes to arrive there.

I mentioned to better call METRO and ask for assistance, lucky me for having the phone on my cell and I proceed to place the call. They transfer me to Metro emergency and they dispatched a wrecker, it was there in aprox. 10 minutes and they take the disabled bike outside the HOV lane to the SAM's parking lot on HWY-6 and I-10, from there the rider call back Progressive to disclose the new location.

A lot of bikers passed trough but only another rider on a streetfighter stop by to check out if we were OK. (thank you very much man!!) He mentioned tha he was also a member of Motohouston.com but did not get his name/handle.

The disabled bike was another Triumph, mid 90's, 955cc Daytona with 65,000 on the odo. The guy was a native from Great Britain with several years already living here in the States buy you can still notice the British accent.

A couple of notes:

1 - It was scary to be standing there, I noticed that the cars were just speeding and not even slowing a little just for precaution. The driver of the wrecker was having trouble to open his door because the cars were not even slowing down when passing, has to wait until no cars were close, traffic was heavy.

2 - I saw at least 2 LEO's in their cages that do not even worry to look what was going on..!!! I understand that they are maybe off-duty but will be nice to see them check if everything was OK. I guess I'm asking too much from the cops but again what can you expect from those guys..???

Some pictures from the cellphone or it did not happen..!!

Here's the British guy (David) inspecting the bike, everything look normal. You can see my bike on the foreground.

The LEO's were in regular cages, so I think they were off-duty and they just do not care.

, good job for helping him out.

I always stop when I see a bike on the side of the road. Carry around a flare or two. Cars usually don't drive over those.

I guess that bill went thru where anyone with an EZ Tag can use it now. What concerns me, is that if I jump on the HOV with 2+ people, is my EZ Tag going to be charged? Even tho I can legally use it?

The I-10 HOV lane is gone..!!! Is going to be replaced for a toll lane, there's another thread regarding this issue also in this section.

http://www.ridemetro.org/News/Detours.aspx

Quote:
Katy Freeway HOV Lane Closing September 8, 2008
The Texas Department of Transportation is delaying the closing of the Katy HOV lane to Sept. 8, 2008 due to potential issues associated with Hurricane Gustav. The closure is necessary for final construction activities on the Katy Freeway and its Managed Lanes.

The Managed Lanes will be operated by the Harris County Toll Road Authority, who will be announcing plans for the opening of the lanes in the near future.

TxDOT is allowing METRO to continue to operate buses in a closed lane through the construction area. METRO buses will have access to a closed lane from 6 – 9 a.m. and from 4 – 7 p.m.

For safety reasons carpools and vanpools will not be allowed in the lane.

We encourage you to ride METRO during the transition period.

Yeah, no such thing as an HOV lane on I-10 anymore really. Now you have to pay to play. Sucks for I-10 folks.

That was cool of you...looking out for a fellow rider. When I went down way back, I was laying in the grass, bike all mangled and a "fellow" rider just passes by...looking at me, I thought, dude..thanks for stopping to see if I'm ok.

Anyway, very cool!! Good looking out.
