Angry Cop encounter what should I have done?

Today on the way to class in the HOV northbound. I am already soaked to my socks and now the traffic just stops.

I start to do the 5mph lane splitting to the left of cars, its not like they are going anywhere any time soon.

Then this white CIVILIAN charger (plastic hub caps, regular license plate, election and HD stickers) blocks my way. Window rolls down, there are 8 sets of handcuffs hanging on a hook near the steering wheel and a guy in uniform starts to yell at me: "You don't pass anyone in the HOV lane, do you understand me, punk!?"

I proceeded to follow behind and exit airline just a few yards further.

Realistically, considering that he is either off-duty or in a really random undercover car what could he possible do as an officer of the law?

And is it illegal to pass people in the HOV anyway?

But what could he possibly do? He can't follow me, and if I understand correctly, being off-duty can't write me a ticket.

1st your not lane splitting...you technical would be passing in a no-passing zone.

He could call another unit to have you ticketed...

and while not specificly addressed in tx law, yes.. lane splitting & sharing is technicaly illegal.

THere is a reason that the HOV is only one lane. Its pretty simple, yes its illegal

traffic keeps piling up, more and more rules are coming out, they keep doing construction on something (just randomly) and there is talk to drop the speed limit. Is someone trying to turn 610 and 290 into Twisted Metal?

Lane splitting is not illegal per say, BUT its usually viewed as a reckless act, so doing it could warrant you a ticket for reckless driving.....that decision is left up to the officer...

Lane splitting is illegal...the police officer could whether off duty or on...could have got you in a world of trouble, he could of either issued you a ticket or taken you to jail for "new traffic" charges. If he was off duty, he could have called a unit to come do the same.

It is not safe at all to split lanes...ESPECIALLY in the HOV!! I would not suggest doing it.

Be safe

Lane splitting can be written up MANY different ways...a couple off the top of my head..
1) Reckles Driving
2) Failure to maintain a single lane of traffic

most likely #2 will be used
These are ticketable and arrestable offenses...or BOTH!!!
