It is my understanding that they started back in the day in old school endurance arcing, long races that would require adding brake fluid at a pit stop! These guys would of course be in a hurry and either spill while adding, and or the reservoir cap wasnt always seated property! The cap wraps were added not to keep the cap on or anything like that, yet simply to help keep the fluid off the bike and racer so he could see!Im not 100% on that just how it was one time explained to me! Since our bikes get their heritage from the track, it was something that followed! Now days parts are made better and SOME riders and racers take a lil better care of their rides, now more like you personal touch on the bike, your style kinda! Not absolute there just my $0.02.

I thought it was also for keeping the brake fluid warm on a cold day .

Just to help catch any leaks, and supposedly to help keep the sunlight away, which degrades the fluid.

Yes, correct. It is to keep the sunlight from degrading the fluid.

The Sunlight isn't the reason why it turns black. It turns black over time as it absorbs moisture. Brake fluid is like a sponge. It soaks up moisture and over time from boiling over and over again within the fluid, it turns dark in color.

+1. That's why it turns darker much quicker when you have a hydraulic clutch. The fluid in the clutch master cylinder is on the motor so it gets very hot all the time and turns black w/ in a few months...

I had always heard not to use a bottle of brake fluid once it has been opened. Use what you can and toss it because of the water...but, sunlight does effect it, too.
