Motorcycle Fees on Katy Tollway

It is my understanding that the tollway athority has not said one way or another if motorycycles are going to have to pay a toll, but from the way I am reading the information on katyfreeway.org it appears that only carpoolers with 3+ people will be able to ride on the HOV for free.

Has anybody heard what the scoop is?

there's a long dicusion about this on TWT, one of the members got this in a reply email...

""The toll road authority's proposed rules call for motorcycles to ride for free during the HOV hours, 6-9 in the morning and 4-7 in the evening. Commissioners Court could change that."

apparently those are the only times it will be an HOV lane, all other times it will be tolled for everyone but buses.

there's a public meeting tonight at 6:00 at the public library in Conco Ranch, I'm going to try and make it

I wonder how they think it is ok to charge someone for something that the US goverment built. If it was a private endevor or the state paid for it then I could understand but the state got the funding from the US goverment. You wouldn't think it was fair to charge the people and not give them their cut. But when it comes to the gov. we know nothing is fair. It upsets me and I don't even ride in the HOV lane.

I agree. By paying taxes we have already helped fund this project and should be allowed access for free any time we please.

Because they see it as a cash cow. Take Beltway 8 for example. The people voted yes on making it a toll because the vote was once it was paid for via tolls it would then be FREE. Beltway 8 has been paid off a long time ago and local government has seen how much revenue it brings. Because of this, going forward expect to see toll after toll being built

So wait, all that construction and inconvenience and tax money spent was on a toll-way? Where is the logic in that?

Yeah, I remember that a long long time ago. Once the money starts coming in there is no way they would do away with an extra form of capital. Although it would be neat to allow motorcycles to allow access for free since that would encourage other forms of transportation and get more cars off the road. They should make all tolls free for motorcycles (legally). And add lane splitting while they are at it.

For those not paying attention out there; this should be a shining example of how great our governing bodies are.

You couldn't be farther from the truth. Beltway is governed by the HCTRA, not TXDOT. Their money is not all federal dollars, as all toll road authorities are. If you recall, Beltway 8 was actually up for sale about 6 years ago because HCTRA didn't have the money to maintain it. They still struggle with that, and are always short on funds.

The original proposal for the Katy Corridor was about 14 years or so and only state and federal funding; funding only gives a certain amount yearly so that is why it would've taken that long. HCTRA got in and offered to give huge bucks to speed up the construction. TxDOT kicked Metro out of the center HOV lanes, and gave them to HCTRA for HOV/HOT lane management. Culberson loved it and being the head of the federal transportation committee, jumped on it and promoted it locally and federally. Metro had kept in mind a future for train possibly, as Culberson stated 'A train from Katy over my dead body'. He went all out to get HCTRA in there and he did.
