Calling all Girls: Small Noob girl needs small noob bike

Hi,

My friend is about 5'1" and wants to start riding. (I took her out to Bandera a few weeks ago and she dug it!) I'd like to help her find a bike she can ride so I figured I would ask here. Any suggestions besides the Ninja 250? The Ninja 250 is already too big for her unless its lowered at least 2 inches. What's the smallest (lowest seat) street legal ride that isn't a cruiser?

TIA.

if a ninja 250 is too big for her then shes 4 foot tall because 5 foot 1 people should be able to ride it and theres nothing smaller unless you want to go for a honda rebel 250

a ninja 250 should do well. you can lower it with some shorter dogbones, readily avail on ebay for like $20

yup those 250s have a pretty low ride height to begin with. lower one and she should be just fine.

I don't think you can get lower than a 250. She shouldn't have much of a problem with it even if she is only 5' 1"

I wouldn't waste money on a 250. Sure, they look nice but, she'll out-grow that REAL fast. Go for a SV650, 500 or a Ninja 650. Light, plenty of power, very light and it won't break the sound barrier. Almost any bike can be made lower. It's all about maturity when it comes to the throttle.

Thanks for the input.

Cowboy up, eh? So it's Ninja 250, Ninja 500, Ninja 650 or SV650. I didn't realize Kawasaki had such a lock on beginner bikes.

I raced an SV650 but never rode a Ninja 650. Is it lighter than an SV? I'm just thining that she might need to get something that she CAN grow out of rather than something that will scare her out of riding. There's always a market for used 250s.

My XGF raced a GS500E and she was 115lbs wet but 5'4". (That girl was some kinda cowgirl, tho.) She did better on the YSR50. These days those 500/650 twins weigh almost as much as my 08 RR!

What do you girls actually ride?

I tried out several CBR's and found they fit me well and can be lower easily, I am 5ft. myself and it was hard to find a bike to fit me. I did for now end up buying a 400 bandit as my first starter bike and then I hope to move up.

I am 5'4 and completely flat foot my SV650. I have a corbin seat which makes it even better. I would be happy to let her sit on mine and see how it feels.

Cool, I liked my SV and I could see an SV making sense. Did you lower it too or just add the Corbin seat? A naked bike makes sense for a first bike, too. Less stuff to break.

I haven't figured out how to quote more than one person in a post but...

k5gsxrman, I know, that's why I started this thread. Another friend of mine bought one and its a piece AFAIAC. It sits in her garage, it won't start and it was gutless and buzzy when it did run. Still, it was plenty for her to start out on.

apalonia6, I was thinking about that but a 600RR might be out of her budget and skill level. Maybe you two can talk. If you can talk her into it... I'm a Honda fan.

tarotammy, that's two votes for the Hondas, three counting mine. I saw a guy racing a 400 Bandit once! What ever happened to the FZR400s and Honda CB1s? One of those would be PERFECT! (Did you know they have CBR 150s in Bermuda?) IMHO, big fun comes in small packages!

Thanks for all the input. Hope to make a meet and greet after getting back from Burning Man.
