Looking for a Riding Jacket!

I am green to motorcycle gear. I have been riding as long as I have been a member of MotoHouston so I am not familiar with what is the best gear. I am looking to purchase a riding Jacket. I have been riding wearing a NASCAR Jack Daniels Jacket that I purchased about two years ago but never had a chance to wear it. My buddy who I ride with told me I need a “REAL” riding jacket and told me the one I had was wack. So I need suggestions on what you all think is best. What can I get that has good quality for a reasonable price. I have a Scorpion EXO-700 Helmet. (I think this exhibits good quality for a reasonable price)!

Someone on the Kawi board mentioned it before, and I read it on here a few weeks ago.

Bought my JR rave there and they were awsome to deal with. Im looking at getting a leather(not Icon) jacket in a month.

If not doing leather do textile. Alpine stars, go 1 size up, i bought one and the arns were to small. Sold it and bought my JR...

Try to find vented leather with textile under arms, something that breathes..

As far as jackets I own and have *unfortunately* field tested many jackets. Here is the straight truth:

You get what you pay for. Texas is hot, and it is unrealistic to believe you are going to wear leather every day. Although, leather is THE BEST protection, it is very hot, yes, even perferated. Therefore you could try something like the A* SMX jacket. It is a mix of leather and mesh. The leather in the biggest crash zones, and mesh under the arms ect for super breathability.

http://www.sandhillspowersports.com/..._smxairfloj_07

This is where people chime in with, "mesh will melt under serious friction." And they are right. The mesh IS NOT a super awesome fabric for jackets, but it DOES get the job done. Textile is OK, maybe better than mesh, but IMO there is very little differance. What you need to realize about anything BUT a leather is: the jacket will be a one and done. Meaning it will work well the one time you go down, but then throw it away, cuz it WILL be thrashed.

More important than anything else will be fit. You want something that fits well. Not quite a second skin like a suit, but snug. Your jacket will do no good if the sleeves ride up over your elbows when you go down, for obvious reasons. Also if it slides up your belly you will have rash in a very uncomfortable place. For these reasons PLEASE go try something on before buying. Not saying you can't buy on the internet, but at least go to a store and get an idea for brand and cut. Or use a sizing chart for refference

http://www.alpinestars.com/sizechartmtletter.htm

The next point is armour. There are many ratings for armour: foam, ce, injected plastic. The plastic is BY FAR the most durable. You will find this in the high end jackets and pants. Next level is CE, it is along the one and done line of thinking. LAST is foam and will offer very little as far a cusion. You want some armour in the shoulders, sleeves, and back. Quality of armour will make a difference. And you DO need to make sure you have it. No point spending $$ on a jacket that won't realistically protect you.

I strongly suggest you consider a secondary back protector. I ride with it EVERY time I go out. I have used both the Icon street armour, but currently have upgraded to an A* bionic vest. This piece of apparel is in my opinion a nessecity, and for the price way worth the trouble. Keep in mind it needs to fit UNDER the jacket, so keep this in mind when buy/sizing the jacket. If possible take it with you when doing your shopping.

Some suggestive links for jackets. Not guaranteeing these are the lowest prices, but at least competitive. And the descriptions are good information.

Leather:

http://www.sandhillspowersports.com/...tars_mx1jkt_08

http://www.sandhillspowersports.com/...s_rc1jacket_07

http://www.sandhillspowersports.com/...s_smkjacket_07

Mesh/Textile:

http://www.sandhillspowersports.com/...ars_trc1jkt_08

http://www.sandhillspowersports.com/...t_ufojacket_06

These are all pretty much the same just pic a color and design. All with CE and the Joe Rockets are all the same cut.
