breaking a cheap fun car hurts a lot less than an expensive new car that you wont pay off until 2012 or so

If you don't treat it like then it will not break

Well then there is one of your "needs". If you want something cheap and reliable that you can really beat up then it's either going to be a Honda product or a Mazda Miata.

IMO mileage with a honda is not an issue. I have a 93 civic EX coupe with about a grand in engine work, that still runs strong at over 314,000 miles, and drive the t out of it. but i guess it depends on how well it is maintained, i do all my own work.
If you do go with a civic i would make sure it is either an EX or a SI cuz the base model are lame. just my .02

As long as you keep the oil changed and keep up with the rest of the maintenence, a honda will last forever. I have a 88 CRX that's still rollin. I'm hopin to get 5 more years so i can slap Antique plates on it. The motor was fine but i got the urge to do a engine swap and upgraded to a decked out LS motor with all the goodies.

Hondas are super easy to work on, parts are easy to find and they hold up well. Pick out whichever one you like the look of. But if you want any kind of performance at all, don't get an automatic tranny.
