Post when should i change my brakes?

The way i figure is for cars you know when to change em when the sqweelers go off ( you know tha awful noise coming from some guys tires when he rides through your neighborhood) But i DO NOT know when to change my bike's breaks although my bike is new and i shouldnt have to change the breaks. I was wondering when you can tell if they need to be changed. Im expecting answers like "when your bike wont stop" but i actually have no clue the bike i own is my first and i would like to make sure that it is well taken care of. Thanks for your time~

some pads have the vent slit in it...

when you get down to 2mm you need pads.

I got caught at Motorcycles Unlimited and ridiculed(in a friendly way) for metal-to-metal rears(and Im a master over at BMW) not sure I'll ever live that down.hahahaha
