Helmet question - Got milk?

Okay it's cool to have the latest and greatest brain bucket to show off at PP1 and other places to be seen and all, but when is it time to replace it? I'm not talking the 1970's Bell bubble face shield type, I have a number of Shoei and Arai helmets that are a couple of years old that I'm happy with and haven't had the opportunity to see if they're worth their price...yet. Standards and specs change every so often but helmets aren't like milk that go bad, so when is it really time to get a new one?

Is there anything that becomes brittle or goes bad to require the every 3 rule? I'm going to need to unload a few of them on the cheap but don't want to sell someone something that's not going to help them.

i read from either a helmet manufacturer website or book that the foam either loses integrity or something along those lines. also, many people have the helmet fall from thier bike and that may crack the foam shell.

you might want to check out the manufacturers website and check out there FAQ ection.

From the MSF handbook.
http://www.msf-usa.org/downloads/helmet_CSI.pdf

Quote:
Most helmet manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet every
two to four years. If you notice any signs of damage before then,
replace it sooner.
Why replace your helmet every few years if it doesn't appear
damaged? Its protective qualities may deteriorate with time and
wear. The chin strap may fray or loosen at its attaching points; the
shell could be chipped or damaged. The best reason is that helmets
keep improving. Chances are that the helmet you buy in a couple of
years will be better – stronger, lighter, and more comfortable – than
the one you own now
