Evel Knievel Days

Got back from Montana the other day after performing for 3 days up at the Evel Knievel Days event. Despite the 29hr drive, this is probably our favorite show to do all year.

We had the front page article and pics after our first day of shows. And the fmx guys had cartoon photos with of different tricks. Felt nice to beat out those guys in the headlines.

Crazy Texans bring it to Butte
By John Grant Emeigh - 07/25/2008
Crazy Texan stunters Zach Shockey, left, Matt Lindamood and “Big” Scott Harmond get ready for their opening show.

Smoking their tires on the Uptown asphalt Thursday, this little ’ole stunt group from Texas sure knows how to leave its mark in Butte.

The Team Stunters SuperBikes, who call themselves the “Crazy Texans,” made their second appearance in Butte at this year’s Evel Knievel Days.

Though they perform at more than 20 shows a year, team members said they look forward to Evel Days all year.

“This show is great. The people here are awesome; they really enjoy the stunts and appreciate them,” said “Big” Scott Harmon, 30, rider and manager.

Fellow rider Matt Lindamood, 30, agreed.

“We’ve been talking about it all year, and we’ve done arena shows in front of 50,000 people,” Lindamood said as the team was warming up for its 4 p.m. show on East Park Street.

The team, which also includes Zach Shockey, 23, has been performing for about six years. They use 600cc sport bikes to do freestyle stunts, such as wheelies and burnouts.

The riders didn’t attempt dangerous stunts until they had been street riding for years. Lindamood said he put in 30,000 to 40,000 miles of riding before doing stunts.

“I got really comfortable with my bike before I did any tricks,” he said.

Harmon broke a bone in his wrist last year during a stunt mishap. Pins fused his wrist back together and the operation sidelined him for eight months.

“I was a little bummed not being able to ride, but now I’m ready to ride,” he said.

Freestyle sport bike riding has gained in popularity in recent years. The event still isn’t a part of the X Games, but Lindamood believes it will be accepted in the games in a few years.

Like many freestyle riders, Lindamood says they started practicing tricks and stunts in the streets and highways of Texas. This is a practice that Lindamood admits was dangerous and encourages the sport to be done in controlled environments, like the Evel Days events.

“Years ago I started on the highways doing stupid stuff, but it’s better this way,” Lindamood said.

The stunt team also includes “Crazy” Mike King, 26, who couldn’t make it for this year’s event.

— Reporter John Grant Emeigh may be reached via email at john.emeigh@lee.net.

If you go The Crazy Texans stunt motorcycle team will perform on East Park Street at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday, and 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday.

He had problems with his bike, couldn't make it.

Yeah we've been busy the past couple weeks... Had the Texas Heatwave in Austin, then left for Montana 2 days later. I've been gone the past 3 weeks, coming back Sunday though, finally!

I'm suppose to get some more pics, but I found a few on someone's myspace a little bit ago, lol. The area we get there is pretty nice, has a little uphill on one side but not too bad. Another reason I like this show is the fencing they put all around our area. We usually don't get that, so it's a nice change.
