question about vehicle titles

Is it a red flag when the person selling a bike has the title but not in their name?

A few more sold

it happens alot in bikes, cuz people don't want to pay the taxes. prob. is if bike still has a lien on it, you won't know cuz you haven't seen the title.

I'd question him/her why.

But, a lot of times people buy and sell without ever titling.

cool ... looking at an SV ... the guys says he has the title, but it's not in his name so I was wondering if that would cause me any issues.

it will when you go get it titled (assuming the original owner didn't sign the title). I got a friend on here who bought a bike from someone who didn't title it....they also got it from someone didn't title it.....and duh duh duh....one more transaction without getting the title. Lucky for him, he/I know all three previous owners and are/were able to track down the original owner. Now wether or not he ever got in touch with the guy is another story.

If the title is already signed by original owner I don't think you have a problem.

or you can sign for the original owner in the 3 places all they care about is if the signatures match.

now what if the seller is selling his bike and he has his info filled out on the back to transfer the title to his name because he was going to, but later decided to sell it; where would i fill out my info on the title? would his name be the one that is filled out in the "owner" section of that title transfer form?

if he was the second owner, technically that will make you the second owner since he never registered it. There is usually no problems[I've done it before] so long as he gives you a title for the vehicle.

I think you have to get an additional form and go back to the original owner who signed the back of the title to get their signature. Just what I'm recollecting from a buddies situation.

Have him give you a bill of sale with his name adress phone # and TDL on it with the description and vin of the bike just in case and file it away for if you ever need it. If he is not willing to do this then it might be a shady deal.
