Aprilia SXV 5.5 wins 2008 Pikes Peak Hill Climb

i knew when i raced my 550 up that mountain last year that the Aprilia was the bike for the job. in the right hands it could win the over all. im glad to see Davey proved me right good job Davey... u are the man !

An Aprilia SXV 5.5 piloted by Davey Durelle has won outright the 2008 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Durelle, competing in the 750cc class, beat rivals on such machinery as Aprilia’s own 750cc Dorsoduro and the 1100cc Ducati Hypermotard (which won the 1200cc class). completed the 12.4 mile, 156 corner course that climbs 4,720 feet to the mountains summit in 11mins, 42secs. Above is a helmet cam video of the race filmed by Davey’s rival, Jeff Grace. You can see Davey pass Jeff just 14 seconds into the clip.

it is crazy. when i ran the race in 2007. a guy crashed his quad during practice and was paralized. u definately dont want to fukk up on that road. if u crash... u better pray its on the bottom section. cause once u get past the treeline.... u either will crash into the mountain or fly off a 1200 ft. cliff.

. It looked like there were sections of dirt/gravel. Are they running street tires or off-road?

it is gravel. its 50/50. the road/coarse is made up of different sections. sum are asphault & sum are dirt. thats why u see just motards & flat track bikes racin up the mountain right now. but i think once they finish paving the entire road/course like they plan to do... it will then open up to the sportbike guys.

there were several "helicopter ride" worthy crashes this year Another Supermoto rider got bucked and suffered broken ribs, punctured lung, and bleeding on the brain, in his post on SMJ, he simply stated "I'm alright, it's nothing serious." A husband and wife team also went off the mountain, both suffering fairly serious injuries although i do not know their current condition. There are turns on that course that have drops of 750-1000 feet if you go over the edge. Definately not a place for rookies!!!

They have teams? Is this like a Superbowl event for them?

Jody, do you know what size Husky Dymond was on? He was hauling the mail on that big single, i was impressed by it's(and his) ability to keep up with that powerful aprilia twin. My first choice in Tards was a Husky SMR510 but this KTM deal just fell into my lap and i couldn't pass it up. Next bike will be Husqvarna for sure. . .
