i don't think you understood what i said...unless the appraisal is thousands less than what the spv is, you won't be saving any money, and it might actually cost you more. the spv is usually pretty close to retail value on MOST vehicles, now of course there are exceptions, but the way that they have worked out the system, you're not going to be saving any money on most transactions. Total BS for them to be able to tax us on used merchandise.

I feel ya, same stuff happened to me. I even made a couple trips up there, cuz some dummy behind the counter was like. Go to a dealership and get them to have in writing how much its worth, and we will use that appraisal sheet. So i put it in the back of the truck and do so. Go back to the taxes office and a different lady is like. no this doesnt work. and the other lady wasnt there. so i just bit it and paid the 500.

A few weeks ago I spoke with a person in the TXDOT office here in Austin and they said , if it is a salvaged titled vehicle, you only pay tax on the bill of Sale amont.

That's how I feel. I hate that the state can tax things that have already been taxed. I like to think my morals and ethics are above par but when it comes to the state out of registration taxes I could care less.

Texas is worse than most states IIRC, I'll look up some other state's policies later to compare. I don't mind paying a registration fee to be able to use the roads one bit, that's totally understandable. But to pay taxes on a vehicle that has already been taxed (multiple times in most cases)

When did they start apprasing the value of your bike?
i could bet that if you got a lawyer you could fight this , i am fixin to do the same thing with the aprilia! but as long as it isnt more that what i paid or what it blue books for i am not going to through a stink!

If i remember correctly when this law was passed it had a claus to it that you can take the car, motorcycle, boat, etc. to a insurance appraiser and pay them to appraise the value of the car, motorcyle, etc and they had a form they would fill out and attach it to the title. and the appraiser was allow to charge anywhere between 50.00 and a 100.00 dollars for it. s$$ks but could save a little money on wrecked or salvage titled bike, car, etc.

There are other stranger laws in other states. In Oklahoma if you trade in your vehicle (after you've already paid taxes for buying it) you still have to pay taxes on that amount rolled into the new vehicle. So basically if you buy a car for $20k, but trade in a car for $5k....your sales tax/registration/title/license amount for the new vehicle is STILL going to be calculated based on the $20k.

well it wasnt even my idea the guy i bought it from never signed his name and the $1000 amount was from the original owner who wrecked it then the guy i bought it from wanted to put it back together but never did so i bought it, salvage, rebuilt it as a "rebuilt" title and went to register it.

I think its BS. The state has more money than all of us anyways

I just talked to a friend at the tax office and they said that the value i got on the web page was at 100 percent and they act tax you at 80 percent, so iwould be taxed on line 4200 and not the hole 5300,

but if you say it was a gift you pay a 10 gift tax, no questions asked and you singne the aplication for registration bla bla bla!

any way it sucks !

what made me mad is they've decided to use this standard value thing, unless the listed sale price is higher. i just had to pay close to $400 to title/register my CRX b/c the price of an additional set of wheels i bought was included in the "sales price" (that is, the seller filled out the line on the title transfer form with vehicle price + price of the additional wheels as the sale price) and i wasn't worried about it at the time b/c i figured i'd just be paying the standard value tax. that me off.

"Salvage or abandoned vehicles (except rebuilt salvage vehicles)"

If I read this right, you might have been able to avoid it if you titled it prior to rebuilding/registering it. IDK for sure, but it seems to read that way?

How long did you have it before you titled it?
