registration apprasial? wtf?

So i went to get my 02 gsxr 600 registered to my name and the state appraised it at $5000, even though the guy i bought it from put down $1000 on the sale price. It has a bashed in tank, zip ties holding the entire bike together and a salvage title. I had to pay freaking $500 for registration.

When did they start apprasing the value of your bike?

you just shot yourself in the foot. If you'd have put $3000 there, the apraiser might have agreed. but he knew it was worth more than $1000 and you were trying to screw the system. what are you complaining about again?

The lady at the courthouse said that no matter what you put the state still appraises it at what they think the value if the bike is.

there is probably a complaint system for that reason. If you can justify why it's not $5,000.

and your $1000 value vs the $3000 paid is the reason why, thanks for abusing the system. your the exact reason why the state has gone the way it has.

quit whining.

I brought the 03 gsxr 600 in there they wanted $300 tax

Yeah, they started doing that last year and they go off the blue book value. I've bought 2 cars and 1 bike since then (all private party) and had to pay tax on a value considerably higher than the purchase price each time.

It's f*&king ridiculous that we have to pay taxes on private party auto sales and now they're getting more. I use to switch cars 3 times a year and usually make money but it's impossible now when you have to pay so much in tax....or just never transfer the title into your name. The latter constitutes Title Fraud btw.

You can, however, still say that the car was a gift and only pay like a $10 'Gift Fee'.

but that is lying so wouldn't it also be title fraud?

They've been doing this since Oct of 07. They use a value called Speculated Purchase Value, or SPV. The only legal way to get out of paying the tax on the SPV is to have the vehicle appraised by a third party appraiser (usually 100-150 bucks) and take that appraisal to the tax office. They will then charge tax on the appraised amount, instead of the SPV. However, the appraised amount has to be of a signifigant difference to make the tax low enough to justify the additional 100-150 dollar cost to pay the appraiser.

It's stupid system and it should be illegal to charge tax on resold merchandise, INCLUDING motor vehicles. We already have to pay taxes and fees every year just to have the "priviledge" of driving on county/state roads, it's absurd how much they charge a someone just to own a car.

isn't that lying so you don't have to pay the fees... and since you are robbing the state of money isn't that stealing?

it was just a suggestion
I bought a bike for 300 bucks and went to go register it and they appraised it at
2500 so i got stuck paying taxes on it.
whats wrong is that even if you wanted to dispute it and get a private appraisal it cost just as much as just paying the taxes. now thats not right

It's not right. But nor is taxing the same vehicle over and over again.

IMO having a salvage title should play some part into the value of the vehicle, thus the taxes paid. Why would they use the "used" value and not the "totaled and used" value?
