Baton Rouge Article, "Sport Bikes Dangerous"

http://www.2theadvocate.com/news/240...ml?index=1&c=y

The guy driving is an old friend of mine from high school that I played baseball with. The motorcycle used to be another friend's bike, which he started riding due to my influence. Sad to hear this. Condolences to the girl's family and sad for Daniel that he has to face these charges now and has to live with this the rest of his life.

well the article says basically that sport bikes are fast and people die on them. yup.

anyway, i wonder if the parents of the girl will have any way to get the charges on him dropped since it says they do not blame him for the wreck. it also says he has "lack of training". when did he start riding do ya know?

"Supersport bikes made up less than 10 percent of registered motorcycles across the country in 2005 but accounted for more than 25 percent of the deaths, according to the study. The fatality rate of 22.5 deaths per 10,000 registered motorcycles for supersport bikes was almost four times higher than the rate of cruisers, the most common motorcycle seen on U.S. highways."

I'm not even sure, I haven't talked to him in a couple years. He is/was a wildlife agent and knowing him I wouldn't think he would be wreckless but it only takes one time. But, I shouldn't say that because the article says he ran off the road and no other details so it's hard to say if it was wreckless or just an accident.

'Broussard, who does not ride sport bikes, said responsible motorcyclists call those types of riders squids, which is derived from the words “squirrelly” and “kid.” They ride without proper safety equipment — perhaps in flip-flops and shorts — while performing at-risk behavior like speeding, weaving through traffic and popping wheelies.'

“Kids don’t understand how dangerous and unforgiving these (sport) bikes are,” he said. “It’s not a safe bike in my opinion to be on.”

I dont see how a MSF instructor could say something like this. How is a sportbike any less safe than a cruiser or ST

“It’s going to take a culture change; it’s going to take a mindset change,” he said. “And it’s going to take the motorcycle community to step up and make that happen.”

This is Very True

Now does everyone see why we push gear, and good training.

Sheesh they are dangerous. They are race bikes being used on the street. You can ride them like a cruiser and be safer but why the heck would you buy one to ride it like a harley dude rides. BORING!@

All motorcycles are dangerous. And the more you ride like an A$$ or without gear, the danger hightens. This article is full of generalizations.

this is VERY specific and very spot-on

"Supersport bikes made up less than 10 percent of registered motorcycles across the country in 2005 but accounted for more than 25 percent of the deaths, according to the study. A sport bike has everything a new rider doesn't need. Power, quick steering, high center of gravity, awesome brakes.

None of which apply to cruiser or beginner bikes. All it takes is a moments lapse in attention or showing off, and you are in a ditch or grill.

Yes all bikes are dangerous, but a Harley Sportster will not get from point a to b anywhere as quick as even a 600 sportbike.

Stupid thing about the article is that none of it is news, and it's all common sense.

jackholes are attracted to sport bikes, if those were not there then they would be on cruisers, maybe.

IMO
