LUFKIN, TX -- Two people were killed and five were injured in a Fourth of July collision that involved five motorcycles near the Sam Rayburn Dam.

Robert Benjamin Boren of Galveston, who was heading west on his Harley Davidson, crossed the center line of Recreational Road 255 and collided with Donald Mitchell Jackson of Wells, who was going east on his Yamaha, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Both were killed.

Another Harley Davidson cyclist, A.W. Wright of Lufkin, drove through the crash scene and struck Jackson. Two other cyclists who followed Wright also crashed.

Wright was taken to Lufkin's Memorial Hospital where he was treated for a broken leg and considered stable, according to a report in Saturday editions of The Lufkin Daily News.

Four others, including two passengers, were treated and released at Jasper Memorial Hospital. One of the passengers was a 12-year-old boy.

Boren was not wearing a helmet, and it was not immediately clear whether Jackson was wearing one, the newspaper reported.

The accident happened near Jasper, which is about 130 miles northeast of Houston.

... that's right down the road from me. That road is a fun loop me and some friends ride all the time, lots of twisties. I'll have to see where exactly it happened, because right there on the dam road, visibility isn't a problem and there's no tight turns til pretty well past the .

Sucks though, but thank no one I know. Was worried at first it might be some of my friends, but one is offshore working right now, and I know Nick wouldn't ride without calling me.

RIP.

SPER COUNTY - A former Galveston County Reserve Sheriff's deputy was one of two persons killed Friday morning in a collision between five motorcycles west of the Sam Rayburn Dam. According to the DPS, five others were injured.

According to investigating State Troopers, the crash occurred shortly before noon Friday when GCSO Reserve Deputy Robert Benajamin "Ben" Boren, 32, of Galveston, traveling west on his Harley Davidson, crossed the center stripe and collided with Donald Mitchell Jackson, of Wells, Texas, riding east on his Yamaha. Troopers say that A.W. Wright, a retired Texas State Trooper of Lufkin, drove into the wreckage on his Harley and hit Jackson. Floyd Nolan Wall, following Wright on his Yamaha, also plowed into the crash. Todd Morgan Weller, of Alvin, who was following Boren laid down his motorcycle in the west lane of traffic.

Boren and Jackson's cycles exploded on impact, according to witnesses. One person attempted CRP on Boren but said it was immediately apparent he was already dead. Jackson's body was on fire but was extinguised by someone with a cooler of water.

Both Jackson and Boren died at the scene. Wright was taken to Memorial Hospital in Lufkin where he is reported in stable condition. Boren was not wearing a helmet. His and Jackson's bodies were taken to Stringer and Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper.

The others involved in the pile-up were treated and released at Jasper Memorial Hospital. The injured included Kristy Renee Wall, 34, riding with Wall and Taylor Weller, 12, riding with Weller.

Jackson was riding with a group of bikers from Brothers Keeper Church in Lufkin.
