Run Carfax, mileage should be put into the system everytime it goes in for inspection etc. If it has 15,000 miles in 2002 then 12,000 in 2005 you know there's an issue

Yes, clusters can be changed, but there's other indicators to the experienced eye that a bike's mileage has been changed.

If you don't know what to look for, and if you can't find someone to go with you, every MH member is always encouraged to bring any bike they're considering buying by the shop.

Actually it does. You can run a bike VIN through carfax as I have done it before. But the info is pretty limited. It just shows registrations and inspections. Sometimes they have mileage, sometimes they don't.
