Good stuff...it reminds me of my first group ride ever. It was with texlurch, he was leading, and we all followed as he got into left lane to pass an 18 wheeler (we maybe hit 80-85 mph). As soon as jim was even with the truck's back tires, the left blinker on the truck came on. Jim made a really quick brake check, and we all were able to slow down enough to get back behind the truck. Thankfully the suv behind the truck had a good distance and let us all in. The truck turned very soon after his blinker came on. I'm just very thankful we had a leader and that nobody made a noob/squid move and tried to squeeze around the truck.

Yeah.. I don't think that guy ever looked because we were behind him for a good ways.

This thread brings up one of my pet peaves. Why do people like to ride in the blind spot on the quarter panels and by the trailer tires on 18 wheelers? I see it all the time, someone will be haulin' to get up even with you, then slow down and ride along right on the rear corner. Dumb dumb.

Best rule of thumb for riding a bike on the street is assume everyone is out to kill you or doesn't see you.

+1 I drove a bus for 18 years and I've came close to taking out cars and bikes in my blind spots. So please be careful when around 18 wheelers and buses.

If you can't see the truck drivers face in his/her mirror they can't see you. Pretty much means 90% of the time they don't see you. I do my best to stay away from trucks.
