OK,
First off where is the definition of proper gear?any gear...I am not picky, something is better than nothing
What do you mean by full gear? Do you look like the Michelin man?yes I ride in full leathers
So you wanna know what's going through my head when I get my bike on huh...
1st I already know what I'm going to do before I turn focus on riding.
I never wear shorts or flipflops, always jeans/pants and boots. (<--real Wolverine boots not ropers or eel/ostrich skin) riding or not.
There are many so I'll try to be simple.

1.Only eye gear and boots.
Keep in mind I live in the stix and would not attemt in the city.

a. Going to the store.
There is no room for store items so where will I keep my helmet, jacket, and gloves while shopping? On the bike NAH.
I go shopping on the bike. I take my gear in with me and put stuff in the shopping cart

b. Checking out work or repairs.
I want to hear, feel, see, and smell everything without restrictions.
What if you made a mistake and the bike tosses you off. I especially wear a lid after working on a bike
c. Visiting friends close buy.friends understand gear
I do this becouse it's easier and cheaper than parking my big ol truck
.
d. Joy riding
Anything under 55 and close buy, by myself and usually improving my tank tan.

e.Giving rides - It reminds me not to do anything stupid with passenger that does not have gear alsoHope you make you passenger wear a lid

2.Helmet, and boots.
a.Country riding when I might find a drunk or exceed 55.

b.Visiting family and friends in the heat but going to exceed 55.

c.I just washed my hair!

3.Helmet, jacket, boots, and gloves
a.All group rides.
b.Cool enough.
c.When the wife rides with gear as passenger and we travel a good ways.
d.When killing bugs at warp speed!
e.Going to m/g's

4. Helmet, jacket, boots, gloves, and pants with knee guards.

a.When it is cold the road is cold = no traction
b.Wet =no traction
c.At the track
d.On cold group rides when it's fashionable or there are rookies behind me.

I do not drink, smoke "anything", or visit the pharmacy so I am very aware of my surroundings all the time including the company I keep, All in all I have 6500 miles on this fuel injected 1liter 4cyl. and I am positive I have Squidded by under 100 miles of it so far.
It is not at all safe and I don't condone it at all but at times I do enjoy the freedom of choice and riding naked!
riding without gear makes me feel vulnerable and uneasy. It takes away from me enjoying the ride.

I amost always wear full gear (zip up teknik mesh pants to jacket) recently I have been going two blocks to McD's to rent movies. Two blocks on a residential street is better than the squids on the freeways without gear. If I don't wear my jacket for some strange reason, I stay on the 35 mph streets. I know you can die at 30 mph without a helmet. I feel naked if I'm not wearing all my gear.

Helmet, jacket, gloves, boots everywhere....only time I don't wear gear (occassionally) is going to the store about 2 blocks from my house (helmet on always), or if I'm on the beach(I don't wear a helmet on the beach)

I ride to the beach with my gear on and then stick it in my friends truck, if my friends didn't come with me...I just keep it on and park and set it on the bike...because honestly if I go down at the beach its soft sand and worst case is I eat some sand from not having my helmet on.

In my case its not a matter of breathable helmet; I have an overactive something whatever that keeps my body temperature higher then normal. Im always sweating... that helmet gets cleaned more often then my underwear...

...well on that note I think I need to post elsewhere...

JK; Lately I been doing more riding without gloves. Not sure why, prolly due to short term "to the store and back" rides but I need to change that attitude.

really the only correct answer is "I choose no to" all the other is justification of the afore mentioned! and justification is nothing more than an excuse!

because its my tax paying right.

"I will defend your right not to wear a helmet to the death, but I will call you an idiot if you dont wear one"...comes to mind.

I wear gear now. but I do so within the parameters of my discretion. not somebody elses.
