Riding moped without gear is almost the same as the big bike. So why wear gear? Unless you wanted that safety protection when you hit the ground.
So, to some people that doesn't wear gear it's because they don't think about laying it down and road rash (short answer - no fear). Second factor is the cool looks, for example down at the beach, why can't you just jump on the bike, with flip flops/half naked and ride down the strand slowly like a moped? If you haul then it will look different, right? Well at least those are my two reasons. Now, I can't ride without wearing gear. That's sucks to be feared.

I lost part of my arm on mykawa rd from road rash... I am always skeered. I know the cruiser mentality is "I am not going fast like those crotch rockets so nothing will happen to me". which is bs cause they have just as many deaths on their side as we do our side.

I have had 2 cousins go down.... 1 died(no gear) the other started wearing gear after his death and went down on 610. got rashed up good but not as bad it would have been without his jacket. Needless to say he is a big fan of gear now.

my girlfriends cousin crashed without gear and now is a veg... her mom won't let her ride with me, and I've never even let her short of her having a helmet, my jacket, jeans, and boots (i wear a regular leather jacket and have an extra helmet)... i'm quite glad I had my gear when i crashed, if I had had the extra money for boots that I meant to get before I left, I wouldn't've even had the sprained ankle which is the only thing that had really hurt at all...

think about this. the average IQ is 100. lotta people fall into that category. it's too easy to not think about problems until they happen, and problems only happen to others. how many of us have been riding in a car with some idiot who, when putting on your seat belt, said "what, you don't trust my driving"? as if that's the only problem out there. same thing, many just want the world to know they are better than gear. no one wants to admit they're in the "middle 100" cuz it's an downer and an ego shot.
then there are those who just don't care. I miss darwin.

In your case, why not flaunt? You gotta let people know how purdy you are. Covering up with gear is a no-no.

Sadly, some people need to go down before they realize the importance of gear. I always loved this saying "dress for the accident, not the weather". I may not be here today if it wasn't for gear. I am always 'preaching' about it, and won't stop. If just 1 more person wears gear and is saved the trouble, my job here is done.

Even with the heat; its no so bad when you start moving. Drink plenty of water and sweat it out. Unzip the jacket a couple inches, open the flaps.

I tore a leather jacket when I slid out once. I managed fine but the jacket didn't. Opened my eyes cause I may have skin that has seen alot of sun being from Cali but its not tough as leather yet.

I prefer my back protector and good leathers; but I go down to a lighter leather jacket w ce armour when the sun comes out and the busa starts snorting heat at me.

well good question ask you, confucius....

I hate to admit it because it is stupid or a death wish to ride without, but sometime you just want to feel the wind blow in your face. who cares how you look.... ridin is all about how you feel....

It's not about my skills... my skills mean nothing to that person that just ran the stop sign when the street is wet or that 18 wheeler just can seem to stop...

but like 100f said... we have to "just live with the choice I made. Good idea or not."

After dropping my bike this week I see how things can happen before you even realize it....

helmets are a must...well atleast for now... Hoping logic continue to win cuz there is no fear...

I do, on hot, hot days, have a tendancy at a long light turning into a gas station to pull my helmet off. someday I may get hit and really be messed up. I found myself doing this three times already this season.

OK,
First off where is the definition of proper gear?
What do you mean by full gear? Do you look like the Michelin man?
So you wanna know what's going through my head when I get my bike on huh...
1st I already know what I'm going to do before I turn focus on riding.
I never wear shorts or flipflops, always jeans/pants and boots. (<--real Wolverine boots not ropers or eel/ostrich skin) riding or not.
There are many so I'll try to be simple.

1.Only eye gear and boots.
Keep in mind I live in the stix and would not attemt in the city.

a. Going to the store.
There is no room for store items so where will I keep my helmet, jacket, and gloves while shopping? On the bike NAH.

b. Checking out work or repairs.
I want to hear, feel, see, and smell everything without restrictions.

c. Visiting friends close buy.
I do this becouse it's easier and cheaper than parking my big ol truck
.
d. Joy riding
Anything under 55 and close buy, by myself and usually improving my tank tan.

e.Giving rides - It reminds me not to do anything stupid with passenger that does not have gear also

2.Helmet, and boots.
a.Country riding when I might find a drunk or exceed 55.

b.Visiting family and friends in the heat but going to exceed 55.

c.I just washed my hair!

3.Helmet, jacket, boots, and gloves
a.All group rides.
b.Cool enough.
c.When the wife rides with gear as passenger and we travel a good ways.
d.When killing bugs at warp speed!
e.Going to m/g's

4. Helmet, jacket, boots, gloves, and pants with knee guards.

a.When it is cold the road is cold = no traction
b.Wet =no traction
c.At the track
d.On cold group rides when it's fashionable or there are rookies behind me.

I do not drink, smoke "anything", or visit the pharmacy so I am very aware of my surroundings all the time including the company I keep, All in all I have 6500 miles on this fuel injected 1liter 4cyl. and I am positive I have Squidded by under 100 miles of it so far.
It is not at all safe and I don't condone it at all but at times I do enjoy the freedom of choice and riding naked!
