Spies Turns Down Suzuki Ride - MOTOGP Spoiler inside

Ben Spies has turned down the chance to replace Loris Capirossi in the Dutch TT after the Italian crashed in this
afternoon's free practice and injured his right arm. Spies decided to turn down the opportunity after missing the
first day of practice (Assen always runs on a Saturday). As well as the prospect of giving the field a days start,
he has also seen the weather forecast, which is not wholly favorable, and is mindful of the Indianapolis MotoGP
test next week.

Seems like he's taking a mature route on this, he doesn't want to lose his day job, bread and butter over a flash in the pan race..... good on him

I agree! I think the AMA championship is still important to him even with the MotoGP being a possible option in the future.

He is in Assen attending the race as spectator though.

That kind of smart thinking is what will someday make him a world champion.

He has more self control then I do........

I would have rode the out of that bike, rain or not if given the chance. Right up until I parked it in a sweeper doing 200+mph.

But then again, I'm not Ben Spies......and I don't have an AMA & eventually a MotoGP career to worry about..........or do I?

No.........I don't.

I have seen him do stupider things then race that race. I am glad he turned it down, but part of me would love to see him show up in the pits tomorrow morning in leathers and race.

Part of me thinks... seat time is valuable, racing this weekend would have given him some additional experience with the bike and help him do even better at Indy.

On the other hand, an injury would indeed suck, eh?

Hmm. I dunno.

...I agree too. No need to jump at any chance. Sounds like he has a plan and is following it.

I actually kindof wonder if safety ran through his mind to the other riders? Maybe he figured if his pace was that far off since he had no practice and had never been to the track, that he may cause issues for the other riders regarding safety, and/ or to affect their points if he held someone up?

I think I'd stay away if I didn't get all the practice too- most of those guys need all the practice time they get to get their suspension dialed and the right tires, and they do this full time.

:dunno: I'd like to see him get some more seat time in a race too- I agree with the idea that he should get more time so that Indy and Laguna are more successful for him.
